New Bern has lost a cherished piece of its soul with the passing of Howard Matthews. If you’ve ever visited downtown New Bern, chances are you heard his voice—singing joyfully as a crowd gathered around, drawn in by his spirit as much as his music. He was a familiar presence, a shared smile, a sound that made our town feel alive. We, along with all of New Bern, mourn his loss and hold his memory close.
