If you see less fruit set on your tomato plants and possibly leaf roll, too, blame the heat.
Marissa Schuh, University of Minnesota Extension, said that this season’s extreme heat likely will impact our tomato plants two ways: Less flower pollination and likely leaf roll.
Compounding issues lead to fruit not developing:
-Pollen becomes sticky so self-pollination less likely
-Hot temperatures, including nighttime temperatures, cause flower abortions
-Pollinators are not pollinating
Schuh, a horticulture Integrated Pest Management Extension educator, was one of the featured speakers at the 2026 Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Conference held July 26-27 at the U-MN Landscape Arboretum.
“It can get too hot for pollination to occur,” she said. “Pollinators won’t go out when it’s 90-degrees plus.”
The heat could be a double whammy on plant physiology overall since plants need cooler nights at night to help fruit ripen.
Regarding leaf roll, Schuh says the plant is showing a physical response to heat. “Some varieties love to do this,” she said. It may look unhealthy, but it is not a disease of concern.
