Creating a literacy-rich home is one of the keys to setting up children for success. Come out this Saturday and hear from our Executive Director about how she taught her 5-year-old how to read by making reading fun in the comfort of her own home!

Solange Launches The Saint Heron Library: A Free Archive of Black and Brown Voices

Artist and visionary Solange Knowles has launched The Saint Heron Library, a free digital and physical archive devoted to preserving and sharing rare, out-of-print works by Black and Brown authors, poets, and artists.

The library’s collection includes first editions, artist books, and archival works that are often kept behind institutional walls or in private collections. By digitizing and lending these materials, Saint Heron aims to make them accessible to all β€” not just scholars or collectors.

Readers can borrow books for free for 45 days, receiving a prepaid return label to send them back. The entire system runs on trust and community, echoing Solange’s belief in collective responsibility and open cultural exchange.

Solange stated, β€œWe would like to play a small part in creating free access to the expansive range of critical thought and expression by these great minds.”

Through this project, The Saint Heron Library continues her broader mission of cultural preservation, reimagining what archives can mean for marginalized voices.

We'll wager that Princeton has more books per capita than any other place in New Jersey. That's why Larry drove up to La Mezzaluna to meet three local book-lovers for a first meeting, brainstorming ways to collect tons of children's and adult books. Thank you Martha Friend, Sherri Bresette Ahlers, and Meera Nathan for planting the seeds.

A 15 minute drive will take you to Trenton, a city where too many children lack access to great books in the home. Let's do something about that!
