Fishing on the Farmington has been quite consistent for what normally is a tougher time of year, aided by the great water conditions we currently have. Water levels sit around 202cfs in the permanent TMA, with water temps fishable through New Hartford. Dry fly fishing has been very productive in the mornings with Trico spinner falls (22-26) and caddis of various species (16-22), and again in the evenings with Isonychia (10-14), Cahills (12-18), and Blue Winged Olives (20-24) all present. Subsurface fishing has been most productive with small-medium sized nymphs (16-22) with the exception being large stonefly nymphs (8-12) and Isonychia nymphs (10-14.) River conditions on the Farmington are great right now, with fishable water temperatures through New Hartford. We still encourage you still keep a thermometer on you, practice taking water temperatures, and check the HOBO Unit in New Hartford for water temps just to be safe. The dam release was dropped this morning, settling the total flow around 172cfs in the Permanent TMA. Your best fishing overall is the bookends of the day in the mornings and evenings. Nymph fishing has been consistent with nice fish being taken on a variety of small-medium sized patterns. If you’re hunting heads, the majority of the river in the mornings will have fish rising to trico spinners ( #22-26) and various caddis species ( #16-22). Evenings include Isonychia ( #10-14), Light Cahills ( #12-18), Hebe’s ( #14-18), and small BWO’s ( #20-24). Have further questions or need more advice/tips before your next outing? The Farmington is in great shape right now with a total flow of 246cfs in the Permanent TMA, with fishable water temperatures through New Hartford. The best times to be out are still mornings and evenings, with morning Trico spinner falls, assorted Caddis, Light Cahills, and Isonychia being the primary hatches. Terrestrials are also important to have, with many nice fish having been taken on ants and beetles recently. If you’re fishing subsurface, focus on mostly smaller nymphs #16-22, with the exception of large stonefly nymphs #8-12 and ISO nymphs #10-14. Being in the faster moving riffles and pocket water is best for success overall. If you’re looking to mix it up for warm water species, we can help you in targeting Smallmouth Bass and Carp as well! The Farmington is at a very nice 309CFS in the Permanent TMA opening up more fishable water and keeping water temperatures in trout-friendly range through New Hartford. Hatches include morning Trico spinner falls ( #22-26), various species of caddis #16-22, Light Cahills #12-16, Isonychia #10-14, Hebe’s #14-16, BWO’s #20-24. Terrestrials such as ants and beetles are also important to have in the box. Subsurface fishing has been somewhat consistent, with smaller nymph patterns size #16-22 being the go-to. Outliers would include stonefly nymphs #8-12 and Isonychia nymphs #10-14. If you’re searching for a mixup from the technical trout fishing, targeting smallmouth and carp is an absolute blast this time of year as well!

The Farmington is in great shape right now with flows at 327 cfs, making for a very fishy flow. The increased water from the dam should help keep temperatures down, but still bring a thermometer and keep an eye on conditions. The morning bite is the time to be on the water. Trico spinner falls ( #22-26) are happening from the Campground downstream, with Needhami’s, caddis, and rusty spinners also in the mix. Through the day, look for Light Cahills, Iso’s, caddis, and BWO’s, especially with the overcast weather. Terrestrials are also a great option right now, either as a prospecting fly or paired with a dropper. Small, thin bugs are the name of the game, but don't overlook larger streamers and "junk" flies, especially after rain. If trout water is getting too warm, smallmouth are a great alternative. Frogs, wigglies, and flies fished tight to structure are producing. Carp are also a great summer target!

Thanks to the recent rains, flows from Hogsback Dam have been increased. The USGS gauge at the Riverton bridge currently reads 219cfs. Combined with the Still River at 76cfs, total flow is around 295cfs. This should help downstream temperatures in the afternoons stay much cooler. That being said, it is still important to carry a thermometer and take water temperature readings, as well as keeping an eye on the HOBO unit gauge.

We are also very much into the small dry fly time of year, with Trico spinner falls and winter/summer caddis hatches occurring in the mornings throughout most of the river. We have some great patterns from Bruce Marino (Winter/Summer caddis adult/pupa) and Tom Inglis (Hi-Vis Trico Spinner) custom tied for these hatches to help you have success on the water! The Farmington got a much-needed bump and is currently flowing at 618 cfs. More rain is in the forecast, so keep an eye on conditions and use caution when wading. Even with cooler water, it's still a good idea to carry a thermometer. With higher flows, focus on river edges, current breaks, and side channels where trout are holding. Early morning caddis, evening BWOs ( #18-24), and the remaining upriver sulphurs are your best hatches. Dry-droppers, stonefly nymphs, and small mayfly patterns are producing, while the higher, stained water is also a great time to throw bigger streamers, mops, and squirmy worms. Warmwater fishing remains excellent. Smallmouth are eating frogs, wigglies, and larger streamers, get your fly as close to cover as possible. Carp are also feeding well and make a great summer target.
