We are honored to be hosting local author Shelley Stoehr Shelley Stoehr for a talk and writing session in celebration of her newly released memoir, Girls Girls Girls. Shelley will be in conversation with author Ryan Dostie Ryan Dostie-Osenko for the first part of this event. For the second part, the two will co-lead an Embodied Writing and the Memoir workshop. Through meditation, guided observation, and writing prompts, Shelley will help participants to explore how storytelling can create pathways for healing and transformation. In this free generative workshop, participants will learn to use embodied, sensory-rich writing as a vehicle for memoir. Writing supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own device or supplies if you prefer. All are welcome! We hope to see you here… 🌈📚❤️

So grateful to have Hafeez Lakhani Hafeez Lakhani , author of the wonderful new novel Abundance, stop by to sign stock and chat with a few Manuscript Meetup members who could make a midweek lunch! Signed copies on the shelf and, if you’re lucky enough to make it out to the Brooklyn Book Festival despite the impending nor’easter, don’t miss Hafeez talking about writing in general and specifically this many-years-in-the-making story about a Muslim Indian family, pursuing the American dream, in all its complexity and precarity… 🌈📚❤️

An evening with Ashia Ajani is always a delight. So wonderful to welcome Ashia back to the bookspace to celebrate this beautiful new book, Tending the Vines: Black Abundance in Eight Plants. We talked many things - engaging with nature beyond consumption, attuning ourselves to the prophetic power of plants, honoring and sustaining Black ecological wisdom, considering what an eco-griot’s account can illuminate (especially about species labeled ‘invasive’), navigating the realities of climate crisis without losing sight of the underlying structures producing crisis, remembering to go outside, to ground in place, to slow down, to attend and tend… This is a gorgeous read - as a poet’s prose so often is - and a helpful one for shifting the prevailing paradigms we project with consequence onto the plants in our midst. So few photos because we were too busy listening and learning! Signed copies on the shelf… 🌈📚❤️

Please consider this your friendly reminder! You need to be here in the bookspace tonight for this brilliance and beauty! At 6:30 PM, we will be hosting Ashia S. Ajani to discuss her new release. Tending the Vines: Black Abundance in Eight Plants. Need more convincing? Consider this from the text: “What if we viewed this world, and all its opulence, as something to protect, elevate, and learn from, rather than just as resources for consumption? What if we saw the world as a being, dripping pearls from her oysters, breathing with deep-sea lungs, loving saltwater fish so much she manifested over 20,000 species of them? Could we fuse our fear to fugitivity? Could we join in ceremony of the black skies, the black waters, for all that we are connected through? Plants, like humans, act as vessels through which our ancestors speak. Shall we heat the call and listen?“ Join us… 🌈📚❤️

What an honor to have Laia Jufresa , author of the gorgeous new release Wishbone, in the bookspace yesterday in conversation with P. Paramita and attendees. So much ground covered: the pull to write this complex story of “motherhood and friendship, art and commerce selfhood and loss”; the invitation to consider what happens to any of us when a loved one disappears (and to consider the particular valence of ‘disappearance’ across peoples, places, times); the challenges and joys of structure, here itself a kind of wishbone, starting in 2038, ending in 1983, unfolding forward into the past as narratives entwine; the deepness of translation as craft, of mono and multilingualism both, of the language and identity nexuses we all occupy… Laia read so compellingly, drawing us all into this new novel, which everyone in the room will certainly read. Indeed, perhaps the only good reason to wait is if you’d like to read Laia’s own Spanish translation of Wishbone, out later this year. Thanks to all who came out, and especially to Laia, who was rhetorical epitome of presence. Swipe for the leaning in, the attention paid to each person and question. If you have the chance to see Laia speak as she tours with Wishbone, we recommend it so highly! 🌈📚❤️
