A few days ago a review of our store Strange Ways New Haven went viral, bringing lots of attention to my 10+ year old business… 👉

This review was troublesome , because although we have “great gifts” this person recommended people don’t come in with their kids because we are q***r-owned and “frequented” by the dreaded LGBTQ. 😱
I tried to respond with caution and care, as I truly don’t wish to create drama or harassment (especially when it comes to something serious like human dignity)—while also recognizing this tired trope q***r people live with daily. I wanted to use it as a teaching moment while defending myself, my staff, my business, and essentially my life (and others).
This reached a lot of people who resonated with it—finding it amusing, ironic, interesting, or maybe just dumb. (Hi new followers! Hope you like fun and strange accessories + gifts.) It’s been our most popular post in the history of Strange Ways Shop using Instagram.
Ultimately, Google informed me that the review was removed yesterday. This is actually kinda surprising but satisfying because let’s be honest: the review was bigoted and prejudice. One if y’all must have reported the review, so thanks for that allyship! 🤜🤛
Poor reviews or legitimate feedback are expected and even appreciated so we can do better, but we can’t just stop being gay so someone can feel better. I created a store and a space that I would want to shop it and support and feel comfortable in—I will not change that for the masses or general customer.
I’m currently in Las Vegas then NYC for trade shows to find customers the most unique, fun, and intriguing products to help y’all express yourself and feel joy. I hope both new and old followers are reminded to support the little guys and the “weirdos” in society and your neighborhood, so that there continue to be unique places for all. We can all have our own little places of comfort, and it doesn’t take away others having their own, too. Find your niche and your family, and f**k the others who don’t get it! 🤭💕 -Alex
