The ospreys here on Long Island have begun their annual migration south, looking for warmer temperatures and abundant fish!

It's really incredible to think that these magnificent fish-hawks were nearly wiped out in the 1970's, due to pesticide usage. But thankfully, regulations changed and the osprey were able to make a huge comeback!

Did you know that some osprey catch their meals with almost 70% success rates! Nature is amazing, isn't it?!

Another shot from the incredible Shenandoah Valley!

Did you ever wonder why so many barns are painted red? The Farmers' Almanac tells us, "Many years ago, choices for paints, sealers and other building materials did not exist. Farmers had to be resourceful in finding or making a paint that would protect and seal the wood on their barns. Hundreds of years ago, many farmers would seal their barns with linseed oil, which is an orange-colored oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant. To this oil, they would add a variety of things, most often milk and lime, but also ferrous oxide, or rust. Rust was plentiful on farms and because it killed fungi and mosses that might grow on barns, it was very effective as a sealant. It turned the mixture red in color. When paint became more available, many people chose red paint for their barns in honor of tradition."

So now you know! 😆

For today's &whiteWednesday, I thought I'd share another of Long Island's lesser-known lighthouses - Old Field Point Light in Old Field, a community on the north shore of Long Island.

According to Wikipedia, "The Old Field Point Light located on the northern tip of Old Field, dates back to 1823. It was built by the United States government for $2,500. The rest of the lighthouse was finished in 1824 for an additional $1,500... The first light came from nine whale oil lamps and was magnified by a large glass reflector... In 1868, a new lighthouse was built, with kerosene lamps. In 1933, an automatic revolving light was installed. When the lighthouse was in use, the caretaker used the Old Field village hall as a home... The U.S. government gave it back to Old Field in 1935, with the proviso that the government can take it back in case of a national emergency. It was taken back during World War II by the U.S. Coast Guard, but after the war they gave it back to the Old Field community."

This beautiful light house is definitely worth visiting!

When we take the ferry from Orient Point to New London, I always see this lighthouse, but we're so far away, it looks tiny!! We finally got a close-up view when we took a lighthouse cruise!

According to Wikipedia, "Race Rock Light is a lighthouse on Race Rock Reef, a dangerous set of rocks on Long Island Sound southwest of Fishers Island and the site of many shipwrecks. It is currently owned and maintained by the New London Maritime Society as part of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act program... Race Rock Light was built 1871–78 and designed by Francis Hopkinson Smith. It is an excellent example of 19th-century engineering and design. The massive masonry foundations on the reef took seven years to complete, but the stone structure, the keeper's quarters, and the tower were built in only nine months once the foundation was secure. The lighthouse has a fourth-order Fresnel lens in a tower standing 67 feet above the waterline. The United States Coast Guard automated the light in 1978... Race Rock Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005."

If you're looking for something fun to do for a few hours out on the North Fork of Long Island, I highly recommend the lighthouse cruise through Cross Sound Ferry!
