The "CRAB GRABBER STORY"
Wednesday, June 12, 2019

The day was a scorching hot summer afternoon in the year 2007 when “The Original Down ‘D Bayou Crab Grabber” was conceived. This unique fishing idea was designed and developed by a long time fisherman from New Iberia, Louisiana; Odis J. The basic theory was to manufacture a simple fishing product in which an avid recreational “crabber” could easil

y catch Blue Point Crabs. Thus, The Original Down ‘D Bayou “Crab Grabber” became a reality. In the beginning, the wooden “Crab Leg” had “Louisiana” hand inscribed on each “Crab Grabber” and was hand crafted from recycled lumber lending to its own individual uniqueness and character. Today, only the “Rock-a-fella” and the “K-Gin” Crab Grabber models still carries that distinction and tradition. Let’s go fishing! Just attach your bait of choice to the “Crab Grabber”, sit back to enjoy a fun filled day on your favorite South Louisiana Bayou.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge Crabbing Report
Grand Chenier, Louisiana

On Tuesday May 5, 2026, Crab Grabber Crabbing Team Member, CG David L. attempted to catch a limit of Blue Point Crabs on the WMA (correction, refuge). After a very short boat ride while scouting for a crabbing location, he observed an unknown weir where the water was moving. Using only two (2) Crab Grabbers and chicken leg quarters as bait, he was able to harvest ninety-four (94) very large "Blue Pointers" within two (2) hours. He stated that the only problem he encountered was not being able to catch any small crabs. Now, that is a problem all crabbing enthusiast would love to encounter. He also stated, that the wind was blowing very hard and only saw one alligator which did not bother him while crabbing. Note: CG David did share twenty (20) "Blue Pointers" with "yours truly". They were all very fat and full.

Rockefeller Refuge Crabbing
"The Blue Pointers are Waiting"

On Sunday March 15, 2026, Crab Grabber's Anita, Janice and David attempted to test their crabbing skills at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge to harvest a dozen or so Blue Point Crabs for an early season "Cajun" crab boil. Their skills paid off catching ninety-five (95) large and extra large "Blue Pointers" within two (2) hours using "Crab Grabbers" and chicken as crab bait. They reported that several dozen small Blue Pointers were also caught but they were all released immediately back into the water unharmed. The weir where they were crabbing was "not" disclosed. (Shame on them!} Hint...the Mud Hole Weir! Note: The trio also reported that there was not a single alligator present to bother them the entire time they were crabbing.

Crabbing 101---"Crabs Not Hungry"
Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge

On Wednesday October 1, 2025, my wife; CG Vanessa, and myself; Odis, tried once again to test our skills catching for a few of those tasty Blue Point crabs on Price Lake Road on the refuge. We arrived at Rockefeller Refuge at official sunrise which was 7:00 am. Ashamed saying this to everyone, but we failed to catch a single "Blue Pointer" until one hour later exactly to the minute. After moving to our third crabbing location on the refuge when we both started putting "Blue Pointers" in the ice chest. At 11:00 am, we called it a day crabbing for us with seventy-seven (77) crabs of various sizes in the ice chest. We observed only two (2) alligators which didn't bother us at all. Note: The few crabbers/cast netters that were there did not do well at all to say the least. Did not see anyone catch a "single" shrimp!

"Blue Point Crabbing Report"
"Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge"

Yesterday, August 17, 2025, Crab Grabber Crabbing Team Members; CG David L. and myself, attempted to "wrangle" a few dozen or so "Blue Pointers" at a couple of the weirs located at Rockefeller Management Area near Grand Chenier, LA.. "Wrangle" was the correct terminology for the day. We were lucky and fortunate enough to catch forty-one (41) "Blue Pointers" that were very large, fat and full. We collectively missed doubled that amount of large ones due to clarity of the water at the "Cement Weir". Once these "crabbies" saw our crab nets approaching them, they hit their "after burners" and headed to the hills. The alligators were very active stealing our crab bait constantly. After two (2) hours being outsmarted by these critters, we tried the "LSU Weir" where, we improved our "skills" somewhat. Note: While at the "Cement Weir", we observed two (2) fathers crabbing with their young children who were from Arnaudville. LA. ( Attached photograph) These young boys were having a time of their life and the air was filled with the beautiful sound of their laughter and excitement of crabbing. Crab Grabber Family members are very proud of both of these fathers for creating many memories in their young children lives.

ROCKEFELLER REFUGE CRABBING
Very "Hot" as in Temperature

On the spur of the moment, my wife; CG Vanessa, and yours truly: CG Odis, decided to chance a crabbing trip to our favorite wildlife management area, Rockefeller. We arrived at official sunrise and after four (4) hours; we hastily retreated back home. Two words, it was unbearably "hot and humid". So after these four (4) hours, we mutually decided to pack everything and head back home. However, after surviving the heat and humidity, our total catch of "Blue Pointers" was fifty-three (53) for our efforts. The "Blue Pointers" were all large and full. That was a blessing indeed! Note: Vanessa and I were both very disheartened to see all the trash and garbage discarded by individuals using the refuge. Very sad knowing what impression other visitors to Rockefeller think of our great state. Everyone visiting Rockefeller, please discard your trash properly. Please!

On Sunday July 6, 2025, Crab Grabber Team Member David L. and his wife; Janice, set out for a fun day catching Blue Point Crabs on the refuge. The crabbing trip via boat to the "Mud Hole" weir ended with sixty(60) select "Blue Pointers" destine for the boiling pot and a warm Cajun gathering with family and friends. Note: Numerous smaller crabs were also caught and returned back into the water during the three(3) hours crabbing at the weir.

"CRAB GRABBERS PRODUCING RESULTS"
"Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge"

The attached photograph was captured on April 10, 2025 while CG"s Vanessa and yours truly were crabbing at the refuge. This photograph shows five(5) Blue Point crabs being harvested on a single "Crab Grabber" line. At this rate, one can catch a limit in a very short period of time. Also, observe the "Crab Grabbers" lying on the ground under the crab net! Note: The bottom left small "Blue Pointer" in the net is an immature female crab that was released back into the water. Everyone should definitely release them for future reproduction. In fact, all the "Blue Pointers" in the net were returned back into the water.

"BLUE POINT CRABS ABOUND"
Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge

On Thursday April 3rd, my wife; CG Vanessa and yours truly, decided to visit Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge to enjoy a day trying to catch a limit of Blue Point crabs. Were we in for a treat! Everybody who were enjoying nature at its best were catching their limits of twelve(12) dozen extra large to medium "Blue Pointers" off the bank. (That included us!) Our entire limit of "Blue Pointers: were caught using six(6) "Crab Grabbers" and chicken as bait. Note: We had the opportunity to meet and visit with Wildlife Enforcement Agent Will C. who checked both our licenses. We wish to thank the entire staff employed with the refuge for a job well done providing Louisiana citizens a location to truly enjoy nature at its very best. Thank you again!
