Gustave-Max Stevens exhibited this painting across Europe, yet kept it in his personal collection for the rest of his life.

Painted in 1899, The Twelve Princesses captures the sisters preparing to escape into an enchanted underground realm. Amid the jewel-toned gowns and intricate adornments, Stevens planted clues to their secret: a mirror, a barred window and a shoe peeking from beneath a princess’s gown. The apprehensive gaze of the youngest sister foreshadows their eventual discovery.

The monumental canvas later appeared at the 1901 Paris Salon before descending through the artist’s family.

Le fauteuil de rotin holds a woman in profile beneath a crimson rose crowned hat as sailboats drift across a distant sea. Jean-Pierre Cassigneul unites his signature elements in a single canvas: fashion fluent gesture, feminine mystery and coastal reverie. Raised amid the ateliers of the Jean Dessès fashion house, Cassigneul trained at both the Académie Charpentier and the École des Beaux-Arts before channeling post-impressionist tradition into a language entirely his own. This 2010 oil demonstrates why he remains among France’s most celebrated living painters.
