🪒 Imagine walking into your barbershop and having a shaving mug waiting with YOUR name written in gold.

Over 100 years ago, this was a real tradition.
Customers had their own personalized shaving mugs, often decorated with gold lettering, artwork, or custom designs. In large barbershops, especially in cities like New York, there could be hundreds of these mugs lining the walls.

Sure, having your own shaving mug made you feel a little important… but the real reason was hygiene. It ensured your barber wasn’t using another customer’s shaving mug during your straight razor shave.

This particular mug belonged to Clarence Muse… and no, that’s not my name. My name is actually Aidan Gill. 😂

🤔 Can you guess what this was used for?

This is called a traveling strop, a tool that men carried in their suitcase to keep their straight razors sharp while traveling.

Before disposable blades and cartridge razors, maintaining your razor was an essential part of the shaving routine. These traveling strops were typically made with horse leather on one side and linen on the other, allowing users to strop and maintain their razor’s edge every morning.
One lesson that still applies today:
A dull blade is often more dangerous than a sharp blade.

This is another fascinating piece from the Barbershop Museum collection and a reminder of how much time and skill once went into a daily shave.

🤔 Did people really think razor blades needed a day off?

Believe it or not, manufacturers once sold sets of seven razor blades, each marked with a different day of the week.

The theory was that if you only used each blade once a week, the metal would have time to “rest” and somehow stay sharper longer. Some believed the edge would regenerate. Others thought the blade would simply perform better after sitting for several days.

Was there any science behind it?

Probably not.

But it became one of the most popular ideas in shaving history and remains one of the most fascinating artifacts in the Barbershop Museum collection.

🇨🇭 Before electric razors, there was this.

This Swiss-made vibrating razor uses a mechanical spring-powered motor instead of batteries or electricity. Simply wind it up with the key, press the button, and off it goes.
Inventors spent decades trying to improve the shaving experience, and vibrating razors were one of the most fascinating experiments. While they’re certainly unique pieces of shaving history, I’m not going to say this is the closest shave I’ve ever had.
After testing countless vintage razors over the years... let’s just say I’ve suffered for science. 😂

🤔 Did vibrating razors actually work?
Long before modern electric razors, inventors were experimenting with vibrating razors like this rare Staley Vibrating Razor. Powered by a mechanical spring-wound system, these unique razors became popular during the 1930s and promised a better shaving experience through vibration.
The idea sounds innovative, but did it actually improve the shave?
After testing more vintage razors than I can count, I’m still not convinced. The jury may still be out on the vibrating razor.
This is another fascinating piece from the Barbershop Museum collection, where we preserve the history of shaving, barbering, and men’s grooming.
