ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Lizz Freeman ()
Lizz Freeman is a community-taught artist who teaches and has a studio practice in New Orleans. Her multi-disciplinary practice began with photography and has evolved to encompass textile arts, printmaking and installation. Her decades-long work with clothing produced an archive of thousands of fabric swatches and a “no waste” philosophy. She draws from this
archive to create her complex and intriguing sewn assemblages.
The Center for Southern Craft & Design exhibits Freeman’s latest series of quilts titled, “Durable
Goods.” Her quilt compositions are improvisational and bold. The fabrics are soft and supple. “Durable Goods” is a nod to the fact that quilts are made to last a lifetime. “New Orleans Sewn Asemblages,” a collection of smaller wall hangings, are also on display. These framed pieces combine colorful textiles through machine and hand sewing, resulting in painting-like
compositions.
Lizz Freeman’s “Durable Goods” is on view and available for purchase at the Center for Southern Craft & Design, located in the Museum Store, now until October 2026.
