A salon is an intersection for the exchange of ideas. It is an invited gathering of diverse individuals who engage in lively discussion and debate around a certain topic as determined by the host.

Although the salon concept begins in Italy in the 15th century, Parisian salons during the Enlightenment era endure as important incubators for radical ideas in a shifting political and philosophical landscape. During this same period, the salon format arrives in New Orleans and finds favor in a growing circle of Spiritualists, like Henry Louis Rey, who gathered around the seance table to commune with the dead.

The Spirited Salon at the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum was first introduced by Owen Ever and continues to be the premiere seasonal event for visitors to experience the Pharmacy Museum in a new and interactive way. Salon gatherings often abide by Latin philosopher Horace’s definition of the aims of poetry: “either to please or to educate.” At the Spirited Salon, we aim for both.

Guided public tours are returning to Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 this October!

Following a public bid process, the City of New Orleans has selected the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans (PRC) as the sole tour operator for the Garden District cemetery, which has been closed to public tours since 2019.

Through this partnership, PRC will offer 75- to 90-minute guided tours with no more than 16 guests per group. Tours will focus on the cemetery’s history, architecture, people and traditions, with family visits, funerals, maintenance and cemetery operations taking priority.

Most importantly, this program is designed with preservation at its center. Under the revenue-sharing agreement, the City will receive a share of tour revenue, while PRC will dedicate a portion of its proceeds exclusively to restoration and preservation at City-owned cemeteries, including Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.

Save Our Cemeteries, now a department of PRC, has more than 50 years of preservation experience and has restored more than 50 family and society tombs within Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.
