The pecan praline has an important history in New Orleans. We highly recommend the new book by Anthony J. Stanonis called "New Orleans Pralines: Plantation Sugar, Louisiana Pecans, and the Marketing of Southern Nostalgia." He delves into the history of cane sugar production, pecan cultivation, and pralines. Most importantly, he emphasizes the contribution and ingenuity of black women, both enslaved and free, in the development of the iconic New Orleans candy, pralines.

Anthony was also kind enough to write an article about pralines for our website. You can check it out with this link: https://leahspralines.com/pages/history-of-pralines-by-anthony-j-stanonis.

And please share the article with anyone interested in Southern food history. Thank you, Anthony! (You can also purchase his book on our website.)

Let's celebrate by honoring the history and contributions of Black New Orleanians. Thank you for letting us re-post your thoughtful description of the New Orleans Pralinières.

"Pralinières or "marchands des pralines" or Praline Ladies were Black women entrepreneurs who sold pralines in the French Quarter in the mid-to-late 19th century.

Their sweet confections, a blend of sugar, pecans, and tradition, were a beloved treat among locals and visitors alike.

Pralinières often would not leave the French Quarter until they sold all their pralines.

This image of a vintage postcard is a tribute to the enduring spirit and contributions of these women who shaped their own actualization, with lasting global impact."

Do you love crunchy chocolates? Meet our brittles and crunch assortment:

Toffee Crunch Bar
Homemade toffee crushed into small pieces and mixed with chocolate. It's the perfect ratio of buttery toffee and creamy chocolate.

Pecan and Toffee Cluster
Homemade toffee pieces and fresh pecan pieces mixed with chocolate and dolloped into a cluster.

Chocolate Dipped Pecan Brittle
Homemade pecan brittle stretched thin, cut into a square, and dipped in chocolate.

Super Crunchy
These are a classic at Leah's. Pecan brittle pieces and rice krispies mixed with chocolate and dolloped into a patty.

Kitchen Sink Cluster
Our newest addition, and my personal favorite. This cluster is made with pretzels, coconut, and fresh pecans.

All of our crispy crunchy chocolates are delicious. And we always use chocolate.

At Leah's Pralines we make frosted pecans every morning. It's one of our older recipes, made the exact same way since the 1940's. They come in three flavors: praline, rum, and orange. They are a classic New Orleans treat!

This fudge has two layers. The bottom is a dark chocolate fudge and the top is a salty peanut butter fudge. It's very rich, smooth, and fun to make!
