King Elvis grabs some Tommy Cakes Crumbles that grackles kicked out of the Big Bird Buffet.

It appears that King Elvis and Queen Priscilla have been molting. Both are growing feathers back again; their royal crop looks a little thin (especially Queen Priscilla - I think she has one or two feathers left on her crown 👑).

Other birds are slowly coming back to The Landing after a busy Grackle and Red-Wing Blackbird Breeding Season. The Red-Winged Blackbirds were VERY territorial this year and chased a lot of birds away.

With colder weather coming, The Landing will be THE SPOT to come and get high quality bird seed. Maybe your birds need to get some too?

We are running a 25% off Fall Migration Sale on the Tommy Cakes Seed Etsy Shop!

Come for seed and suet creations; your birds will love it and thank you!

Well, well, well! I am waiting for a customer to pick up some flowers from Julie Domres | Floral Designer, and I spotted movement in the flowers.

Look there! The hummingbirds are STILL here! Yay!

I never look for hummingbirds up front, but maybe next year, I’ll pay more attention! I only say that because they are heading south soon (like this week).

So wonderful to see our little friends before they go away for the winter. ❤️

And then we had 2…..!

This is another first: two Ruby throadted hummingbirds in the feeder at the same time.

I bet our babies are going to migrate soon. There has been a noticeable uptick in hummingbird activity this week.

The moment I have been waiting for FINALLY happened today:

A male Baltimore Oriole used the new perch and sampled the sweet nectar on the Birdfy Smart Hummingbird Feeder!

We are up close and personal with this beautiful bird. His colors are fabulous in the afternoon sun, and it made me laugh seeing him peck at the camera as he is figuring things out.

This made my day! They won’t be with us for long, so this was perfect timing.

Grackle Season is over, and the crows and other birds are returning to The Landing, our home in Western Wisconsin.

The two crows are eating in the Big Bird Buffet, a large platform feeder on the shore of the Willow River.

I have plans to add a solar powered Birdfy camera to this feeder, and I need to modify the left side of the feeder. I am going to remove the suet feeder, add a “house” to house and protect the camera and attach the solar panel to the “house.”

Then we’ll get some fun videos during the migration and winter months. I am looking forward to that! 😁

One of things I have been doing over the past few weeks is feeding my backyard birds a seed cakes or donut stackers along with some suet. While some folks worry about the suet going rancid or melting in the hot sun, I am not worried at all.

Why?

The backyard birds LOVE my suet, and it never lasts more than a day. They will eat the suet right out from under the seed cylinder. It always makes me laugh.

It also amazes me that the woodpeckers seem to KNOW when the suet is out. They must be able to smell the peanut butter. We have had all of Wisconsin Woodpecker species (including the elusive red-headed woodpecker) stopping at The Landing for our suet. It makes me very happy!

At Tommy Cakes Seed, we are cranking up suet production for cooler weather and fall migration. Let me know if you want to try some in your feeders for your backyard birds. They will absolutely LOVE it!

The orioles were waiting for me to return! Two swooped in immediately after I loaded the glass cups with grape jelly and grape nectar.

They are in the “Oriole Haus” on Oriole Hill. I make these large Oriole feeders out of cedar. The Oriole Haus Feeder is available at Tommy Cakes Seed on Etsy.

I am happy to be home after a week in the desert in Pueblo, CO. I think my backyard birds, kitties and Jules (not in this order per se) are happy I am home too.

The Great Heron preens on the Otter Log in the cool morning here on the Willow River. The grackles and red winged blackbirds are off the nest, have relaxed and stopped chasing this beautiful bird.

You have to love these beautiful Saturdays here at The Landing in Western Wisconsin. 😁

Believe it or not: the birds wait for me to fill the feeders with delicious Tommy Cakes Seed. I put out the following creations:

✅ 2 mealworm seed cakes (spicy cakes made with mealworms and 4 pepper sauces or flakes)
✅ 1 half cylinder (a little bigger than a donut stacker)
✅ 1 suet donut stacker

I know people worry about putting suet out this time of year. I get it: peanut butter and lard do not do well in high heat environments.

The thing is: this suet is not going to be around long enough to spoil. The birds will absolutely devour this suet stacker today. I mean, we had a pleated woodpecker stop by earlier today….they LOVE my suet! I am not worried at all.

Cakes, stackers and cylinder seed creations = We have it all at Tommy Cakes Seed. Pick some up today from our Etsy Shop. 😁

You birds will thank you because it is DELICIOUS!
