Expanding the Full Picture

In PPI #3 (pictured,) American contemporary artist Leslie Hewitt attempts to come to terms with both the teaching and the unlearning of photographs through an examination of reportage photography, portraiture, and conceptual art. Through a staging of and search for mediated sites of resistance, this process expands on how a public might collectively reconcile grief and images of trauma.

In an effort to redress these issues through public dialogue, organized two conversations over the course of #2020, one with ; and the other with .

PPI #3 originated in fall 2019 with TEACHING PHOTOGRAPHS, a symposium co-organized by and . Leslie Hewitt organized this issue as a “postscript” to the symposium, responding in and out of time with the fraught and divisive events of 2020 in the foreground, middle ground, and background of her field of vision.

🎨 The bold compositions of artist Oli Epp, first drawn from real-world observations, begin with a pencil sketch, which is then scanned into a computer.

There, in the frictionless space of a user interface, he begins to dissemble and re-assemble the image, again and again according to the economic rubric of advertising clarity or the infographic. Yet, the hand drawing — imperfect and, perhaps, in its unsteadiness, vulnerable in its fallibility — remains.

🌟 Produced on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Perrotin NY, proceeds for this product benefit the Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center of NYC.

In 2010, Cattelan started a biannual, picture-based publication, Toiletpaper, co-created with the photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. The duo’s playful and provocative use of materials, objects, and gestures—set in challenging contexts—forces commentary and engagement.

🪞 On the topic of what it takes to produce these mind-bending works, the Cattelan said this to the :

“Playing video games, getting an espresso or taking a bicycle ride are important moments to prepare yourself for the difficult task of producing a picture.”
