Nina Gbor is the founder of Swap in the City, a clothes swap hub in Sydney, Australia.

“Swap in the City is Australia’s first clothing swap hub, and the first to operate with a strict ’no fast fashion’ policy. Unlike one-off events, our hub allows people to drop in and swap during opening hours. This policy is essential: accepting fast fashion would overwhelm the system and undermine our mission. More importantly, it creates a moment of reflection. When we decline items, it encourages people to think critically about what they buy: who made it, under what conditions, and at what environmental cost”, Nina says.

Swap in The City is open to all, although most customers are women. In the future, Nina hopes to see more swap hubs pop up all over Australia and in other countries, too.

“Clothing swaps are a simple, low-cost, and effective way to reduce waste and promote circularity. They can be hosted anywhere, from homes to community spaces, and extended beyond clothing to other items like household goods or plants. In a time of increasing environmental and economic pressure, these systems offer practical alternatives to traditional consumption.”

Mother-and-daughter duo Melissa and Eliza Korducavich run a vintage business Green Tambourine Vintage inside a huge village building that houses almost 4,000 square feet of vintage items in Unadilla, NY – a reason to start planning a fall trip to Upstate NY now!

Green Tambourine shares the third floor of this iconic building with two other vintage businesses: Everything Textiles from A to Z and The Vintage Closet. You can anything from the 1800s to Y2K on this floor – clothing, accessories, home decor and textiles.

“We at Green Tambourine specialize in fun, groovy and psychedelic clothing and accessories from the 60s and 70s. Most items are affordably priced, enabling many people to afford a piece of history. We have since branched out to also include many items from the 1800s to the 70s”, Melissa and Eliza told us.

Recently they have seen 80s fashion gaining in popularity. “80s fashion has become popular as each generation reaches middle age, the fashion and decor of its youth comes back around. Younger people also seem curious about what their parents wore as teenagers. 80s pop culture has been growing with the younger generations because of popular movies and music.”

Cara Weinstock has been running her vintage business Cara Mia Vintage out of Sydney for 14 years. But the obsession started way before that.

Back in the late 90s, Cara was a teenager spending $15 at the newsagent on copies of The Face, French Vogue, Italian Vogue – anything European she could get her hands on. Australia felt isolated, and those magazines were the window. She fell hard for designers she couldn’t remotely afford. So she started hitting up flea markets instead.

It turned out that nobody in Australia knew what they were sitting on. People were selling Versace dresses for $AUD 50. She’d spot a 70s Zandra Rhodes top for $AUD 20 because she’d been studying those magazines like textbooks. She still has an Ossie Clark dress from that era – one of her first finds, which is too sentimental to sell still.

After school she traveled the world, visited iconic stores like Resurrection in New York and One of a Kind in London. She returned home, tried do work as a lawyer, but eventually opened her online store and became a designer vintage seller.

Now her collection is almost entirely European designer from the 60s through the 2000s, mostly French and Italian. She gravitates toward Westwood, Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel, and Gaultier – feminine, glamorous statement pieces.

How to wear a 60s headband! We spotted sam from Sweden at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

“My hot take about vintage: museum pieces are put in vitrines and are instructed to not be touched – don’t touch someone else’s antique piece either if you’ve haven’t asked for permission”, says Sam C, 31, a producer and stylist from Stockholm.

“Vinted is making everything way too cheap”, says Emma Lawrie, 34, a trend forecaster from UK.

“It’s great as a buyer, but rare and one-off items aren’t holding their value the way they used to. I like to be able to offload a rare or hardly worn piece every now and then and I have people offering £10 ($13.5) for it. It’s a vicious cycle because I just hoard items now.“
