Take a walk with The Outsider.

A secret history of comics, unearthed within the moving biography of legendary comic artist Bernard Krigstein.

The Outsider is a story about dedication, frustration, ambition, anger, integrity ―the 1950s comic book industry― all told in vivid, painterly strokes of melancholic blue.

Our Special Guests:
Joseph D’Esposito was born in Brooklyn, NY. His love of comics began in his aunt and uncle’s candy store in Carroll Gardens; their home was full of DC and Marvel Comics. D’Esposito’s comic-inspired drawings led him to take painting and drawing classes at the Brooklyn Museum and life drawing classes at the Arts Students League. He attended the High School of Art and Design, where he studied with the talented Bernie Krigstein.

In 1976, D’Esposito got a job working for comic book artist Neal Adams, he assisted on the first KISS comic in 1977 by drawing details on Gene Simmons boots, which got him credit as a Crusty Bunker, a loose group of young artists who coalesced around Adam’s Continuity Studios. He worked as a colorist on the graphic novels Coyote and Scorpio Rose, illustrated by Marshall Rogers for Eclipse Comics, and Super Boxers by Ron Wilson for Marvel Comics. He also did layouts for the comic book adaptation of 2010: The Year We Make Contact for Marvel Comics. In recent years, D’Esposito is an accomplished painter and has shown in many galleries in NYC.

Josef Rubinstein is a legendary 40+ year veteran comic book artist and inker renowned for his work in the acclaimed 1982 Wolverine miniseries along with Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, as well as his record-setting 20 years tenure on the Marvel Comics’, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. He was the recipient of the prestigious Eisner Award in 2004 for best humor publication for DC’s Formerly Known as the Justice League. Working primarily as an inker, Joe’s artwork has been published by such other iconic U.S. comic publishers as DC and Dark Horse. His work includes Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet. Joe’s current passion is painting.

NYCC will be winding down but FPNYC is still ramping things up! Join us on SUNDAY OCTOBER 11TH from 6-8PM for a signing and release party for Joe D’Esposito’s brand new book The Outsider, published by Fantagraphics .

This original graphic novel is a beautifully illustrated biographical take on the life and influence of comic artist Bernie Krigstein.

Joining the celebration will be D’Esposito’s life long friend Josef Rubinstein , legendary comics inker of endless classics including Wolverine and The History of the Marvel Universe. These two Joes share a long history in their artistic journey, each having been students of Krigstein at the High School of Art and Design as well as both being part of Neal Adam’s crew of Crusty Bunkers. Experience comic book history the New York way with two Joes under one roof in the city’s oldest funny book shop. This will surely be a night to remember.

Comics in the 1950s is a nowhere medium for journeymen and artistically frustrated illustrators. Certainly that’s what Bernie Krigstein ―a comics artist and out-of-step painter slumming in the sleazy comics industry to make ends meet― thinks. What starts as an escape attempt from the rut of cranking out comics takes successive leaps into tales of labor organizing and fighting tenaciously to realize the artistic potential of the medium.

The Outsider is both a bird’s-eye view of the comic book industry in the 1950s and an intimate portrait of one of its most militant artists. Joseph D’Esposito explores the Jewish roots of comics and its lineage of Black, women, and other unsung participants (such as Matt Baker, a Black pioneer of the graphic novel). In the political hotbed of postwar America, the personal and the political weave vertiginously, culminating in “Master Race,” written by Al Feldstein and elevated into one of the few serious early comics works by Krigstein’s formal innovations.

What better way to top off weekend than with a couple of old friends reminiscing about the influential Kriegstein.

So mark your calendar for October 11th and meet these two less than average Joes!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club in this thrilling horror novel by the bestselling author of Clown in a Cornfield—now with a new foreword by Stephen Graham Jones!

It’s 1988, and two best friends—one departing for college, one destined for bad-boy townie life—decide to have a final video night before their friendship changes forever. Billy and Tom’s plan is perfect. They’ve got pizza and b**r, and Tom even managed to convince his girlfriend, Darcy, to bring a friend, Billy’s neighbor and crush, Rachel. But what they don’t know is that there’s an invasion underway.

Across the street, Rachel’s sister, Rhonda, was one of the first to turn. A slithering, chitinous evil has overtaken her body and mind, and she’ll do anything to spread the alien infection. Blood, s*x, rock and roll, invaders from outer space, and tender perspectives on teen male friendship: Video Night is one cult classic that has it all!

Adam Cesare is a Bram Stoker Award-winning author of the Clown in a Cornfield series, the graphic novel Dead Mall, and several other novels and novellas, including the cult hit Video Night. Shake off that NYCC hangover with one more totally awesome signing event. Join us MONDAY OCTOBER 12TH, 5-7PM to celebrate the Fantagraphics release of Santos Sisters Vol 2 with the Eisner Award winning artist, writer duo Greg and Fake!

Ambar and Alana, aka the superhero duo Santos Sisters, are back! And now, with an Eisner Award under their collective belt in addition to being imbued with the powers of the goddess Madame Sosostris, they’re even better prepared for whatever comes their way! Whether it be foiling disastrous plots to take down the local power grid, rescuing boyfriends from jealous supervillains, saving senior citizens from drug addiction, or battling the duo’s ever-expanding rogue’s gallery of supervillainery, Ambar and Alana always bring the comic book fun in this healthy conflation of four-color nostalgia, action, and laughs!

Greg Petre draws, Fake Petre writes. They’ve known each other since high school, and have never stopped tinkering together: coloring comics, illustration, animation, video games, painting, and even decorating McDonald’s windows. The “ Greg & Fake “ signature dates back to 2009. They came to comics later in life, after a visit to the artist alley at a convention where they realized they could sell their own drawings.

In 2021, they self-published Giant Sized Santos Sisters No. 1, a 56-page newsprint comic, distributed by Floating World Comics . The series became a quarterly publication, fueled by a group of gag writer friends (Graham Smith, Dave Landsberger, & Marc Koprinarov), much like MAD Magazine. Today, one lives in Chicago, the other in Manzanillo, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, and Santos Sisters is created between the two. In 2025, Fantagraphics collected the first five issues into a hardcover volume.

That same year, at SDCC, Santos Sisters received the Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series, beating Ultimate Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Fantastic Four, and Detective Comics. A self-published comic book, born on newspaper, beating Marvel & DC to the punch in a top category: that almost never happens.

Come see what all the hype is about!
