Wait… Uulan. Uulan daw. Uulan pala. Uulan yata. Uulan ba?

Huh??? 😭 How are these tiny little words doing THIS much work?

Filipino clitics may be short, but they can completely shift the meaning, tone, certainty, source, or intention behind a sentence. One little daw, pala, yata, ba, nga, pa, na, or lang and suddenly… we’re saying something slightly different.

And because Filipino likes to keep us linguistically humble: this is not a complete list. Not even close. These are just some of the more common clitics we use all the time without thinking twice about them.

This Buwan ng Wika, we’re going down a Filipino language rabbit hole and looking at the little things we say every day without realizing just how much grammar is packed into them.

First up: reduplication. From kakain and tatakbo, to araw-araw, mahal na mahal, and words like paru-paro, Filipino uses repetition in ways that can signal aspect, frequency, intensity, and even become part of the word itself.

The more you look, the more interesting it gets.
