jade is not usually bought for yourself. it arrives.

at birth, a 长命锁. the name means longevity lock, and the idea is literal: the child is locked to this world so that nothing can take them away. grandparents give it. it is the first thing many chinese babies wear.

at a wedding, a bangle. often not a new one. a mother works hers off her own wrist, which is not easy after decades, and slides it onto her daughter's. the bangle has to be sized to go on and stay on, so it is a commitment in the most physical sense.

in between, a 平安扣 for safe passage, worn on the road, on a first job, on a move to another country.

the piece is rarely the point. what it marks is.
