Happy Mother’s Day to all who celebrate!
My mom influenced me in untold ways. She’s the reason I fell in love with fashion, art and so many other beautiful things. Her eye and sense of style shaped mine from a very young age. I also inherited her passion for hosting and having friends over. She’s an incredibly resourceful woman who decorated all her houses herself, and who knows how to sew like no one. I’ve seen her sewing curtains, table covers, napkins, and pillow covers among many other things. She taught me what we could call in French “le goût des belles choses” (the taste of great things).
She started her career as a frame makers and painting restorer, she then became an antique seller, and is now retired and is a full time painter who still makes her own frame. With her skills and taste she could have also easily been an interior designer, a fashion stylist or an art curator/advisor.
Relationships with parents can be complex. Two years ago I decided to stop contact with my mom as I realized that, as much as I love her, my mom is an emotionally unsafe parent and a dysfunctional person. I had to put distance between her and I to protect myself and heal. It was an incredibly hard decision to make but I don’t regret it.
That decision might not last forever, but in the meantime I’m learning how to heal, forgive her and accept her for who she is. It’s been such a hard journey but I know that God is with me and guiding me through it. He’s giving me strength and courage every steps of the way, and He’s teaching me how to let go of the pain, sadness, anger, fear and resentment.
Today I’m celebrating her in my heart and grieving the loss of love, emotional safety, stability and protection that wasn’t given to me growing up.
