Engraved official letter form partially engraved on bluish laid paper, manuscript annotations on both sides of one sheet of paper, with the official red wax seal of the Département de Loches with “Marianne,” the national personification of Liberty, in Roman-style clothing, standing above “République Françoise.” Chosen deliberately to signify a break with the old royal regime of kings and promote republican ideology, Marianne had become the female allegory of the First French Republic by the date of this Extract from the register of Deliberations of the Directory of the District of Loches, July 2, 1793. Written hastily and in a rough hand, this is a legal record of a criminal proceeding that records indictments that were delivered by Citizen Bomeau to the district administrator and commissioner about the measurements of quantities of grain and their destination during the harvest of 1792.
