Thomas Vincent Ramos, better known as T.V. Ramos, was a Garifuna activist, community leader, and one of the key figures behind the establishment of Garifuna Settlement Day in Belize.

Born in Honduras and later settling in Belize, Ramos dedicated his life to preserving Garifuna culture, language, and identity during a time when much of our history was overlooked. Through organizing, advocacy, and education, he helped ensure that the arrival of the Garinagu to Belize on November 19, 1802 would be formally recognized and celebrated.

In 1941, thanks to his efforts and the work of community leaders alongside him, Garifuna Settlement Day became an official holiday in Dangriga before later expanding nationally across Belize.

His legacy lives on every time Garinagu gather to celebrate our history, language, music, and resilience.

🎥 From the archives: Calypso Rose speaks on the Garifuna story 🖤💛🤍

While Garinagu can be found in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, this clip highlights Garifuna history and the journey of our people finding our way to Belize (in the 18th* century), a key part of our shared story.

A living legend in Caribbean music, Calypso Rose has spent decades using her voice to uplift the region’s history, people, and culture. Born in Trinidad & Tobago, she became one of the first women to break through in calypso, earning the title “Queen of Calypso” and paving the way for generations after her.
Her connection to Garifuna culture is also felt through music. She was featured on “Watina” by Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective, a powerful track from the album Watina (2007), a project that helped bring Garifuna music to global recognition and was later honored by UNESCO.

“Watina,” (“I called out”) speaks to longing, memory, and connection across distance. Calypso Rose’s presence adds another layer of Caribbean unity, bridging cultures through sound and storytelling.
Moments like this remind us how interconnected our histories are across the diaspora.
