While Garinagu can be found in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, this clip highlights Garifuna history and the journey of our people finding our way to Belize (in the 18th* century), a key part of our shared story.
A living legend in Caribbean music, Calypso Rose has spent decades using her voice to uplift the region’s history, people, and culture. Born in Trinidad & Tobago, she became one of the first women to break through in calypso, earning the title “Queen of Calypso” and paving the way for generations after her.
Her connection to Garifuna culture is also felt through music. She was featured on “Watina” by Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective, a powerful track from the album Watina (2007), a project that helped bring Garifuna music to global recognition and was later honored by UNESCO.
“Watina,” (“I called out”) speaks to longing, memory, and connection across distance. Calypso Rose’s presence adds another layer of Caribbean unity, bridging cultures through sound and storytelling.
Moments like this remind us how interconnected our histories are across the diaspora.
