Jim Shankman - Scene Study Class at the Michael Howard Studios

Jim Shankman - Scene Study Class at the Michael Howard Studios Ongoing scene study class on Tuesday evenings at the Michael Howard Studio.

The class is based on my own years of training with Michael Howard and Terry Schreiber and my work as a professional acto.r My scene study class focuses on the actor’s ability to reveal himself from within the roles he creates. The class uses scene study and exercise work to strengthen and stretch the actor’s imagination in order to bring his deepest feelings, his deepest sense of self to his work

and to use an awakened imagination to create active characters whose behavior is dramatically clear and direct. The class also concentrates on the actor's ability to interpret the playwright’s text in order to create character, define relationships, understand situation and find the story that is at the heart of the scene. We practice working with an extensive series of acting tools that I have been exposed to in my life in the theatre in order to enhance the actor’s imagination and inform his ability to behave truthfully and dramatically. I encourage actors to devise a personal way of working, a personal craft from among the many ways of working I will present to them. The aim of the class is not to indoctrinate an actor into a specific way of working but to train the actor to work truthfully however he finds his way to that goal.

Here's a piece of Brando I've never seen. When you see him absolutely fresh, for the first time like this, you are struck again by how remarkable he was, how many different things he did as an actor, and why you can't take your eyes off him, even in a screen test in a role he's probably too much of a man to play but plays beautifully anyway full of hurt and anger. Man oh man.

Marlon Brando's screen test for Rebel without a Cause. Probably the best quality on Youtube right now.
