So thrilled to share with you this book news!!! Inspired by a word game I played with my mom as a kid; I found it hilarious at the time; like many wonders of childhood, when I saw it with adult eyes, it seemed richer and deeper. I’m incredibly lucky to be making this book alongside my friend the brilliant + a true picture book sage. ✨📚💕

Fox + Dodge are skeptical of the fuss about bored billionaires blasting into space in fancy rockets. Do they not have access to a good junk pile? A stray pool noodle + toilet plunger? Or for that matter, a lively imagination?! Lovely to see A Fort on the Moon featured among other imagination centered picture books in this month’s 🌕🪠🚀💙

More from the Stories archives — these from two of my all-time favorite events:
1. An autographed plastic poncho from our launch party for Weather Weather by + ☔️
2. Clopper Tea (IYKYK) from our Halloween party for the Witches of Benevento series by John Marciano + 🫖 Reader, I drank it. 📚💙

A couple more weeks of them sharing a room. I like having my whole heart safely tucked up in one space each night. It’s a happy room, sad to think of packing it up. Change is hard, even when you’ve chosen it. 💙😭

Packing for the move/obsessively pouring over the Stories archives. Who do I love as much as booksellers? Children’s book illustrators. These geniuses live with their imaginations on the outside, fully present + at the ready. These drawings are from our Sunday Storytimes, workshops, book launches + other events in the Storytelling Lab; many were tossed off in 5 minutes with short, speedy, be-markered collaborators trying to trip them. I’ll put more up in stories. These 10 are by:

Me + my tired mug packing up the last of the Stories inventory for the literary angels — the Bookmobile comes to pick up the boxes today! Booksellers are a curious combination of critic, fan, confidant, tastemaker, keen observer + pure muscle 💪 On a given day at Stories our booksellers would walk up the stairs retrieving inventory ten times, recommend books for families on grief or gender identity, curate a gorgeous window display of graphic novels, sing a song to cheer a crying baby, buoy a tired parent, make me laugh + tell me what film to watch, etc. Miss those days. People keep asking me if I have a secret plan to open a bookshop in the Hudson Valley and the answer is no! I’m a once in a lifetime kind of bookshop girl + there are so many good people doing that well upstate already. But I’ll always be a bookseller at heart. Bless the book people! Long may they shine. 📚💙

Eric Carle 1929-2021. RIP. What a gorgeous, life changing body of work he leaves behind. The thing about the great children’s book creators is that they live at your house for years at a time, a constant presence, a memorized, cherished daily visitor. I read Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me to both these boys 100 times at least. And how many times did , , , .cathy (and others) and I read From Head to Toe at Storytime in the Stories Storytelling Lab? Countless! “Can you do it? I can do it!” These photos were from a pilgrimage to in my hometown Amherst, MA that we made in August 2019. A joyful expedition—go as soon as you are able. 📚💙

Lost two teeth in two days. Last night after the first, he asked if I was the tooth fairy. I have a rule about never telling an outright lie to my kids so I stood there thinking for a moment. Then we all cried. In the morning he told me in an ironic tone what the tooth fairy had delivered. I said we could still make believe you know. Just we’d be doing it together. Older one agreed. There’s magic in make believe as sure as in fairies. 🦷😭💙

A few of our well loved picture books about moving (but also about so much more). Thanks to all who shared recommendations—I shared in our (insta) stories. Stories Bookshop Alums, Booksellers, Bookstagrammers, Book Fam, what are your go-to suggestions for moving + goodbye books? 💙📚

Completely obsessed with them since 2010 + 2013, respectively. Older one said today: if there’s a Mother’s Day + a Father’s Day, why isn’t there an older sibling day + a younger sibling day? And then we thought, why stop there? Aunt day + cousin day + steps day etc etc! Here’s to making your own damn days + finding excuses to give your loves a squeeze. 💙
