Women bring all Voters into the world
Let Women Vote

This iconic suffrage poster, showing a mother cradling her baby, was first published on the cover of the magazine The Woman Citizen on October 27, 1917. The simple pen and ink sketch above a boldly lettered slogan was highly effective in conveying its message. Similar to the young women in Flagg’s popular Uncle Sam posters of the same era, she is pretty, wholesome and implicitly patriotic. Flagg reminds us that not only do all male voters originate from women, but also that these children will very likely become the soldiers sent overseas to protect American interests. By playing on our most intimate concerns, Flagg created one of the most convincing arguments for women’s suffrage.

James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was a New York based artist and illustrator, who contributed widely to periodicals at the time, but is best known for his propaganda posters featuring Uncle Sam.

ART DIRECTORS have been known to spend long hours working
- their fingers to the bone over a hot drawing board. What is not generally known is that they spend much longer hours with these same fingers crossed in hopeful anticipation that the final reproduction will somehow manage to retain the tonal qualities of their original art. Mechanical limitations always! And if a loss in artistic value occurs in black-and-white reproduction, how much greater are the hazards of color reproduction?
