We lost my Mom earlier this week. In this painting, created by my sister long ago, Mom’s billowy afro completes the silhouette of her poised at the swing machine. We will love and miss her always.

A pair of 60 year-old household scissors that are of exceptionally high quality, and feel great to hold (I’m holding in my left hand here, because I was holding the phone in my right). Childhood memories of these scissors as a constant tool. Had been tucked away in a forgotten drawer for years. Made by Betakut, an Italian company, these scissors are just wonderful. Cyber-sleuthing told me these are not dressmaking shears, no beveled edge, but perfectly useful for all else. And, in our lives, there is plenty of “else”. Scrubbed “em down with baking soda and vinegar, tried in vain to snip thread with the tips… will resume using for all else. Just like and share for no reason, please.

The joy of not teaching a linear class allows me to focus on only the students who come eager to learn specific tasks. Last week, in my “Sew and Help” mode, I guided a woman to copy some flowy pants and a blouse she loved, helped her with the layout on her fabric (she brought it with her to class), and helped her to aboud some cutting pitfalls. I explained what a directional fabric is, and what considerations it requires while cutting. This week, I advised a student on altering skirts after weight loss, whether she pays a professional, or does it herself. I also advised how to choose, cut and sew the fabric she will likely choose to make curtains. Two more classes will be taught this August! Come, if you have questions! In fact, come, even if you don’t!

Today’s sewing class met the mission. Community members came - of different native languages, different perspectives and ages. One came with fabric she needed to overcome her trepidation and learn how to cut. I brought a mechanical sewing machine to explain its parts, features, explain why it could be both a great beginner and long term machine, how to care for and understand it. As the other students watched the cutting lesson, I explained how directional prints (hers was directional) affect cutting, and what other considerations can sneak up on you. In short, learning to sew is diligent practice, followed by on your own trial and error, error, error, success, more self-education, triumph, disaster, repeat. If you’re okay with that, we’re off to a great start!

Beautiful quilts at Textile Art Gallery NYC in Chelsea. Spent the afternoon appreciating this fantastic work with a great group of sewing professionals/textile artists. This gallery showcase was great brain food and fuel for discussion. Highly recommended.
