HANDBUILT POETRY
We’ve been carrying Catto Studio for three years now — a Dutch artist working out of a Brooklyn studio, quietly making some of the most singular ceramics we’ve come across. Every piece is entirely handbuilt: pinched, coiled, and shaped by hand rather than thrown on a wheel. What comes out reads as handbuilt poetry — soft asymmetries, painterly glazes, small marks in gold luster, textures pressed into the clay.

Kan-mō-ki

There’s a word in Japanese for what’s happening to your hair right now: 換毛期, kan-mō-ki—the same term used for animals shedding their summer coats to grow in a heavier one for winter. Nobody in the West bothered to name it, but the French skincare world has clocked the same phenomenon: hair grows faster in summer heat and UV, and by fall, a larger batch than usual hits the end of its cycle at once and sheds together. Somewhere between fifty and a hundred hairs a day is normal. This time of year, that number climbs, for about a month, sometimes two.
It’s not hair loss in the alarming sense. It’s hair turning over, the way it’s always done, just more visibly right now.
The Japanese approach to this season treats the scalp exactly like skin—something that gets the same daily attention as your face, not an afterthought under your hair.

Tender Monsters on our shelves.
​A few Dogabis, hand-carved porcelain spirits with gold teeth, each one fired in the kiln six separate times before it’s finished. Owls, small and large, keeping watch. A few Garumons, still annoyed at everyone, still made of beeswax, still no two alike. And Alice, the dragon, back for anyone who’s been waiting specifically for her.
For when the light starts changing and a room could use a little company.
