An almost square koro, made in the shape of a Chinese sacred incense burner. Dark patinated bronze with yellow brass inlays, polished to look like gold.

Extreme calligraphy: Furansu (仏蘭西) France

Korean bottle vase with beautiful underglaze copper red design of grasses bending in the wind. Something happened and the bottle collapsed under its own weight while being fired. The accident made the piece no less beautiful.

A squash-shaped tea caddy made of amethyst-colored glass and gold foil by the glass artist Akira Ichiya (1937-2003). The cover is made of a white resin imitating ivory.

Japan, 1987 or a little earlier.

H with cover 4.9 x diam 2.6 in.

Comes with the original wooden storage box, signed and sealed by the artist.

Akira Ichiya (1937-2003) was born in Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture in 1937. He taught himself the art of glass blowing and became a pioneer in contemporary glass art in Japan. He developed his signature technique in which silver or gold leaf sealed within glass is transformed through controlled firing into radiant hues of gold, amber, green, and violet.

Statue of Shiba or Akita dog, by Ohi Toshiro (Chozaemon X), Japan

Molded and hand-modeled grayish stoneware, covered in a beautiful multi-shaded ameyu (iron-brown) glaze.

Artist stamp impressed in the bottom: Toshi. Seal of Ohi Toshiro, also known as Ohi Chozaemon X (1927-2023).

Japan, 1980s or 1990s.

H 10 x W 4.3 x D 5 in.

Comes with the original wooden storage box. The cover is inscribed on the outside Inu (dog), and signed on the inside Toshiro with the seal Toshi.

A Mashiko style platter with a geometric design created in wax-resist technique. The back is not typical for Mashiko, the potter is unknown (unidentified mark), but the platter speaks to me. Timeless freshness.

Hawaiian born potter Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011) formally trained at the University of Hawaii and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She is best known for her ceramics, although she made bronze sculptures, paintings and textile art.
