Practical jokes are childish and not very professional. Which is EXACTLY why Southwest Airlines embraces them and shares with customers what happens inside the family ... in this case, an employee's cubical getting re-decorated with old flight charts:

.. SWA's page is a place to meet the team and feel closer to the people who fly you around for hundreds of dollars a trip. If they're happy as employees, you're more likely to feel happy as a customer.

Example of ultra effective 1-to-1 social media connecting!

Make your Twitter followers more than just a number. Make them a loyal customer by relating to them as one person relates to another!
..Time consuming? Can be. It takes an extra minute or two for each of your future loyal customers. But isn't that worth it, rather than wasting all that Twitter time with ineffective, impersonal push tactics?

Second place: a "thanks for the follow" tweet. Better than nothing, but if it's still impersonal, you didn't accomplish that much. Take the extra minute to relate to your customers 1-to-1.

America's most popular sport and league certainly isn't standing pat with their popularity ... they continue to draw fans using effective social media. In an era where owners and stadiums have outpriced most fans, the NFL finds another way to include -- through interactive tweets and facebook posts.

See how they ask fans to predict storylines for the weekend...? Now fans have more than just spectator interest -- they have personal BUY IN (I want to follow the game and see how **MY PUBLIC PICKS** turn out!) ...use this buy-in technique for your business too!

In fact ... non-sports businesses should use sports and other outside interests to gain both personal touch and "public buy in" with their customers.

.. Buying a car can be a daunting challenge. When a Southern California buyer is choosing which dealership to visit, will he/she go to the one who has been pushing "deals" and sales all this time ... or will they go to the dealer who talks sports with them?

Your business doesn't always have to keep an "on-task" social media agenda. Treat your customers as people, and treat your BUSINESS as a person or small group of real people, who eat, sleep, enjoy tv, and maybe watch Kobe alley-oops to Andrew Bynum.
