On September 28th, we came together to honor and bid farewell to Printed Matter St Marks, which served the East Village community for six wonderful years. For this occasion, the bookstore transformed into BAR sí, a participatory installation by artist Rujuta Rao where she invited attendees to engage with a unique menu of experiences across a bar counter. This menu featured the Goan spirited drink made out of cashew, Feni, an edible pairing, alongside artworks, artist books, and printed matter crafted by Rao.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating. Now that Printed Matter St Marks has closed, we look forward to seeing you at our Printed Matter Chelsea location

We are still stocked with some titles from our Penumbra Foundation Risography Photobooks window installation that ended earlier this month! Jenica Heintzelman’s Down a Stream is just one of the many books from the installation.

“Down a Stream explores the idea of how unresolved trauma can live in the physical body. Stemming from my own participation in mind-body interventions, I became fascinated with the notion of healing and the role of performance and belief in the process. The book includes reenactments of different healing modalities focusing on touch as well as mysterious domestic spaces. A world made of familiar spaces and gestures is transformed into strange encounters with themes of visual entrapment and an undercurrent of disquietude. Heavily influenced by hypnotherapy, the predominant purple ink evokes a dreamlike state and fragmented texts in metallic gold are rewritten portions from actual hypnosis sessions that shimmer in and out of legibility. Half pages are interspersed throughout the book to conceal and reveal information, referencing the disjointed memory that is so often associated with trauma. Tense muscles, bodies lifting other bodies and awkward embraces create an enigmatic experience with no easy resolution—a reflection of a healing process, at once unsettling and never fully complete.” – Jenica Heintzelman

Nguyễn is the most common last name in Vietnam, the 12th most common in Australia, and the 38th most common in America. The mass displacement of Vietnamese bodies as a result of the nation’s multiple bouts of colonial struggle throughout history has led to Nguyễn’s evolution as a word, becoming a cultural signifier connoting a monolithic set of people of Vietnamese ethnicity. Then, once added the common female middle name, Thị, “Nguyễn Thị” becomes a phrase that denotes the subset of femme-bodied Vietnamese.

✿ ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ “Nguyễn Thị 4eva” ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ ✿ functions as a dress-up game, a diary exchange between two best friends, an individual reflection on existing as ₊˚⊹♡ Nguyễn Thịs ₊˚⊹♡ in a world where their experience is constantly being questioned and diminished, and, at its core, a reframing of the Viet trans narrative as something that is beautiful, frivolously fun, and unabashedly filled with shimmers and sparkles!
