Fred Bass Way is finally here! It was such an honor to have Senator Bob Kerrey, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Assembly Member Grace Lee, the executive director of Union Square Partnership Julie Stein, and so many of our wonderful friends alongside the Bass Wyden family this morning to celebrate the official unveiling of Fred Bass Way. And of course, a huge thank you to our Council Member Harvey Epstein, also in attendance, for making this possible!

“What is the labor behind beauty? Can you buy beauty? Who makes money out of beauty? Who performs beauty and who receives it? Who do we deem beautiful? Why? Are you beautiful? Do you want to be beautiful? What do you gain out of beauty? What goes into a bottle of nail polish? Why do we care so much about beauty? Pick this up for thoughtful answers to all these questions!” - Ndobe, Visual Merchandiser

Just arrived in the Rare Book Room: three first editions by Vladimir Nabokov (Strong Opinions, Poems and Problems, Transparent Things), all inscribed to a friend by the author himself—including a correction to the text he issued in the pages of Poems and Problems, his book of chess and poetry. Plus, a first edition French copy of L’Enchanteur (The Enchanter), signed by Véra Nabokov, Vladimir’s wife, who famously assumed many roles for her husband: typist, editor, assistant, translator, chauffeur, and much more, making his career possible. All four of these books are available now on our website and in our Rare Book Room.

“Written by legendary tech journalist Cory Doctorow, this is a fantastic primer on how unregulated tech monopolies are making your life worse—and how they can be stopped. With clear prose, playful wit, and an abiding moral outrage, Doctorow lays bare the ways in which corporate greed, data theft, and freedom-eroding policies are being perpetrated by some of the biggest companies in America. Whether you know the term already or not, you’ve felt the effects of ensh*ttification in your life. This future classic is ground zero for fighting back.” - Kevin, Customer Service/Subscriptions

For May, we’ve pulled together a list of our favorite sci-fi, slipstream, and speculative fiction by Asian American and Pacific Islander authors. This list looks at the strange, the uncanny, the apocalyptic and the edenic and the dystopian, alternate pasts, futures that seem impossible, and futures that already feel too close for comfort. All these books and many more, through the link in our bio.

We have so many wonderful new books out today, and so many of them are signed! Ray Nayler’s PALACE OF THE CROWS is speculative fiction about an interspecies alliance in a dense Lithuanian forest, where three children hide during World War II. Elsie Silver’s latest, FEVER DREAM, is a Western rivals-to-lovers about forbidden romance on the set of a reality TV show. Ryan Kennedy’s Score is also is set just off-screen, as a screenwriter and musician work together on a Harlem Renassance biopic, a decade after their brutal breakup. Come grab all these books and more, in store and on our website!
