The Autumn Equinox is almost here.🍂
We can tell by the hour that the sun hits our 🪩 disco ball. Right now it his about 10:00 a.m. but it will get later as the days get shorter.
Visit us to see the hat changeover from Spring to Fall. The hats migrate across the shop walls as we always have a full range of seasonal hats for those that travel and those from the Southern Hemisphere.

There’s too much to remember about that day and what followed. A beautiful early Fall day…crisp with blue skies. The smoke and the smell of that morning would last till December 8th.
Here’s to the OGs that made it through 9/11, the 2008 Financial crisis, Hurricane Sandy, Covid and the current craziness:

How it Started:
booked myself a room at the TWA Hotel TWA Hotel with a view of the runway…for quiet birthday.

How it Went:
I told people about my plan and said if you want to do a “fly by” feel free.
I took the train to the plane and checked in to my superb room with a view of the world’s airlines.
Lobby rendez-vous at 5:30 presented a sight of two friends in crochet/flower outfits playing Twister.
They left to change into cocktail attire for “Cocktails on Conney” the retired 1958 Lockheed Constellation that was part of the TWA fleet.
I was getting a drink at the plane tail from the “Captain” bartender, that’s when I turned around and saw said friends dressed as Pan Am air hostesses!
What a picture!
The plane filled up with arrivals and much merriment ensued.
It started to rain but we were cozy inside the fuselage, and then it rained harder and harder.
At one point we experienced “turbulence” despite the fact that the plane is permanently grounded!
It was only later that we realized that we had been grazed by the tornado that roared into the Rockaways!
Our merry gang headed into the terminal for dinner at the excellent Paris Café
Next up was mandatory posing in the Photo Booth, dancing in the Jet Set lounge and goodbyes as some left for the subway back to the city and others to their impeccable vintage rooms.

I woke up various times through the night to watch planes land and take off.
I got super excited to see a Kenya Airways land!!
In the morning I joined those that had stayed at the rooftop pool! It was sunny with blue skies with incredible cloud formations.
The pool bar is completely on 1962 point. We watched planes land and takeoff whilst dipping in the heated pool.

Then it was time to head home via the train to the plane.

How it Ended:
I felt like a kid that had eaten too much cake and sweets and run around the party. Overexcited but very, very happy.

This is my favorite scene in the Sopranos for obvious reasons!
Don’t get me wrong, I have to thank the baseball cap revival of the mid 80’s for bringing back hats which led to the opening of The Hat Shop BUT a little decorum, that’s rooted in history*, is requested.
It just so happened that James Gandolfini was a Hat Shop customer. A little note, we never let on that we know someone until they let us know who they are.
He and I bantered about accents. He asked where I grew up and I said “Jersey” but he knew there was more to it than that and countered with “which one?”
As he was leaving I said “I loved you in…” and I could see him twinge a little, and then I said “In the Loop” and he burst out laughing and relieved.
