Bears kill seven people in Japan this year as attacks hit record high

The number of people killed by bears in Japan this year has reached a record high, the country's environment ministry has said.

Seven people have died since April - the highest since 2006 when data was first recorded - with fatalities mostly in north-eastern regions and the northern prefecture of Hokkaido.

A 60-year-old man cleaning an outdoor hot spring bath has gone missing what is suspected to be the latest incident.

Attacks by bears tend to surge in autumn before bears hibernate, with experts saying low yields of beech nuts because of climate change could be driving hungry animals into residential areas. Depopulation has also been cited as a factor.
The environmental ministry figures show the seven fatalities this year surpassed the five recorded in the year to April 2024.

About 100 other people have also been injured so far this year, up from 85 injuries and three fatalities, in the previous 12 months.

Investigators found human blood and bear fur at the scene of the latest suspected bear attack in the city of Kitakami in Iwate prefecture on Thursday.

It comes after it was confirmed that a man found dead last week in Iwate was killed by a bear.

Another recent incident took place in Numata, Gunma, north of Tokyo, when a 1.4m (4.5ft) adult bear entered a supermarket, lightly injuring two men, one in his 70s and another in his 60s.

The store is close to mountainous areas, but has never had bears come close before.

According to local media, the store's manager said about 30 to 40 customers were inside, and the bear became agitated as it struggled to find the exit.

The same day a farmer in Iwate region was scratched and bitten by a bear, accompanied by a cub, outside his house.

And earlier this month a Spanish tourist was attacked by a bear at a bus stop in the village of Shirakawa-go in central Japan.

Two types of bear are found in Japan - Asian black bears, and bigger brown bears which are found on the island of Hokkaido.

Blue-green algae blight continues as projects aim to tackle blooms

The sight of Northern Ireland's waterways being covered in slimy, potentially toxic blue-green algae has become a regular occurrence in recent years - and 2025 is no different.

The algae has been detected almost 100 times across Northern Ireland since the start of the year, with the majority of sightings in Lough Neagh and the Lower Bann, as well as Lough Erne.

Lough Neagh, the UK's largest freshwater lake, has been blighted by large blooms of the potentially toxic algae in recent years.

With these blooms becoming a recurrent event, not just confined to summer, and scientists warning they are likely to keep happening for many years to come - how bad is the issue and what's being done about it?
A year ago the Northern Ireland Executive approved a plan to tackle the crisis at Lough Neagh.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) said 14 actions have been delivered and 22 are progressing.

Some of those actions have involved looking at trialling potential solutions, including bubble buoys and other initiatives - but in the meantime, questions persist over the condition of the lough.

Fishermen have blamed water quality for playing a role in the cancellation of the eel-fishing season.

The lough's health was further spotlighted by a joint visit by the Church Leaders Group (Ireland) earlier this month.

The group includes Archbishops Eamon Martin and John McDowell, leaders of the Catholic Church and Church of Ireland; Rev Dr Trevor Gribben, moderator of the Presbyterian Church; and Rev Alan Wardlow, president of the Methodist Church in Ireland.

They went to Maghery Point and Coney Island and met fishermen, local residents and campaigners.

Archbishop Martin said the lough was a "microcosm" of the greater issues facing the planet, adding that we "have to be very conscious of the threats and the difficulties that are facing the earth at this time".
Although blue-green algae and other blooms are causing problems in many waterways all over the world, Lough Neagh poses a particular challenge.

It has many designations and protections because of its importance for wildlife and biodiversity.

It is also a leisure and commercial resource - and let's not forget that it is vast, about 400 sq km, with a catchment almost 10 times that.

Almost half of Northern Ireland's land ultimately drains into Lough Neagh, meaning that everything that goes onto that land - from agriculture, industry, wastewater, septic tank seepage and households - has the potential to affect the lough.

It also provides 40% of Northern Ireland's drinking water, including half of Belfast's.

All these factors combine to make monitoring and managing problems very complicated.
Potential solutions to the blue-green algal problem in Lough Neagh have been piloted as part of the executive's action plan.

There are two small business research initiatives are under way, looking at solutions and using technology to monitor the algae. The second phase of both is due to be announced soon.

Among the potential solutions is a "bubble barrier".

This involves two solar-powered buoys using compressed air to generate bubbles in a pattern that could push the algae into or out of specific areas.

Another initiative looked to space, using drone and satellite technology to predict and detect when and where algal blooms may form.

Other schemes, meanwhile, may seek to address the main source of pollution in the lough - from agricultural sources.

The Sustainable Utilisation of Livestock Slurry (SULS) was launched before the action plan but is included in it - it aims to tackle Northern Ireland's manure surplus.

The Soil Nutrient Health Scheme is in its final year, with every field in Northern Ireland being tested for its nutrient content.

That should help farmers target fertiliser more efficiently and help reduce the phosphorus surplus in the soil - issues that can be contributing factors to blooms.

However, it is likely to be several years before these or any of the other potential solutions could become active, or have a direct impact on the lough.
More immediately, the Nutrients Action Programme (NAP) seeks to address water pollution from agricultural sources.

It was first introduced in 2007 and led to improvements in water quality before the introduction of the Going for Growth strategy, which promoted the intensification of agriculture.

That, Daera said, largely wiped out any gains the first five years of the NAP had made.

This latest version of NAP is several years overdue, and the Office for Environmental Protection has signalled its interest in the delay.

But Agriculture and Environment Minister Andrew Muir faced calls in the assembly to cancel the consultation on the draft plan.

After he announced a plan to convene a stakeholder group that would review the responses, followed by a second consultation, farming groups encouraged members to take part in the process.

A new NAP is already several years overdue and is a legal obligation.

The initial consultation closed at the end of July.

After the review group completes its work and the second consultation is held, it is hoped a final draft will be brought to the executive for approval as soon as possible.

In a statement Daera said work will continue alongside progressing the remaining actions, including the required review of the Nutrients Action Programme, with consultation responses being analysed and a Stakeholder Task and Finish Group to be established.

The department said water quality monitoring outreach events have been delivered to farm businesses.

The statement said: "The minister has been consistently on the record that the separate regulatory regime with NI Water on wastewater known as SORPI needs to change and will be bringing proposals to executive colleagues on the matter over the time ahead."

The minister said there are no quick fixes to the situation at Lough Neagh, with problems "decades in the making and decades in the fixing".
Technically known as cyanobacteria, blue-green algae is a collection of microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams.

Under certain conditions, blue-green algae can become abundant in warm, shallow, undisturbed, nutrient-rich surface waters that receive a lot of sunlight.

When this occurs, blue-green algae can form blooms that discolour the water, or produce floating mats or scums on the water's surface.

The algae are bacteria, which can cause skin irritation and sickness in people who come into contact with it, but the biggest risk is to pets, livestock and wildlife.

Scientists propose novel way of treating mosquitoes for malaria

Mosquitoes should be given malaria drugs to clear their infection so they can no longer spread the disease, say US researchers.

Malaria parasites, which kill nearly 600,000 people a year, mostly children, are spread by female mosquitoes when they drink blood.

Current efforts aim to kill mosquitoes with insecticide rather than curing them of malaria.

But a team at Harvard University has found a pair of drugs which can successfully rid the insects of malaria when absorbed through their legs. Coating bed nets in the drug cocktail is the long-term aim.

Sleeping under a bed net has been one of the most successful ways of preventing malaria as the main malaria-spreading mosquitoes hunt at night.

Vaccines to protect children living in high-risk malaria areas are also recommended.

Nets are both a physical barrier and also contain insecticides which kill mosquitoes that land on them.

But mosquitoes have become resistant to insecticide in many countries so the chemicals no longer kill the insects as effectively as they used to.

"We haven't really tried to directly kill parasites in the mosquito before this, because we were just killing the mosquito," says researcher Dr Alexandra Probst, from Harvard.

However, she says that approach is "no longer cutting it".
The researchers analysed malaria's DNA to find possible weak spots while it is infecting mosquitoes.

They took a large library of potential drugs and narrowed it down to a shortlist of 22. These were tested when female mosquitoes were given a blood-meal contaminated with malaria.

In their article in Nature, the scientists describe two highly effective drugs that killed 100% of the parasites.

The drugs were tested on material similar to bed nets.

"Even if that mosquito survives contact with the bed net, the parasites within are killed and so it's still not transmitting malaria," said Dr Probst.

"I think this is a really exciting approach, because it's a totally new way of targeting mosquitoes themselves."

She says the malaria parasite is less likely to become resistant to the drugs as there are billions of them in each infected person, but less than five in each mosquito.

The effect of the drugs lasts for a year on the nets, potentially making it a cheap and long-lasting alternative to insecticide, the researchers say.

This approach has been proven in the laboratory. The next stage is already planned in Ethiopia to see if the anti-malarial bed nets are effective in the real world.

It will take at least six years before all the studies are completed to know if this approach will work.

But the vision is to have bed nets treated with both anti-malaria drugs and insecticide so that if one approach doesn't work, then the other will.

Exceptionally low river levels raise fears over water supplies

Many of the UK's rivers have hit exceptionally low levels and that could worsen in the next three months, according to the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), raising questions over supplies to households, farmers and businesses.

The warning comes after the driest spring in England since 1961, with northern regions experiencing the driest start to the year in nearly a century.

Almost all of the UK is expected to have below normal or low river levels in May, apart from the south-west of England and southern Wales.

The Environment Agency has said that the UK is at medium risk of drought and warned households of the risk of water restrictions.

The next 2-3 weeks will be "crucial" in determining whether the country goes into drought, says Mark Owen, head of fisheries for the Angling Trust and a member of the National Drought Group.

That is the committee, led by the government, that declares if and when a drought is officially under way.

The country is not now in drought, but the impacts of the exceptionally dry weather are already being felt.

Some farmers are being forced to water their crops instead of relying on rainfall, which is something that normally happens later in the year.

"We are having a drought now from an agricultural point of view," arable farmer Nick Deane told BBC News from his farm in Norfolk.

He had to start irrigating his fields in March.

"We have to ration our water and decide which areas we are going to put that water on in order to keep the crops growing," he said.

He warned that an extremely long drought would mean farmers struggle to produce food and more produce would need to be imported.

The dry and sunny weather this year has led to a larger area of the UK burned by wildfires this year compared to in any other entire year.
The last drought was in June-August 2022, which was the joint hottest summer (with 2018) and fifth driest since the 1890s.

Five companies introduced hosepipe bans, affecting 19 million people, and waterways had restricted navigation.

That drought was preceded by six months of very dry weather.

However, the wet summer in 2024 and moderately-wet winter means water supplies are in a better place now and water companies have larger reserves to rely on.

But dry weather earlier in the year has risks. It does "potentially pose a greater risk to water resources later on in the year, particularly if the dry weather continues," says Stephen Turner, hydrologist at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
Last week, Richard Thompson, chair of the National Drought Group, warned that water companies may need to bring in water restrictions to protect supplies if the dry weather continues.

At the moment the key questions are when will it next rain and when it does, how much will there be.

There are some signs that some rain is on the horizon, with unsettled weather from the west at the end of next week.

Drinking water comes from different places depending on the geography and geology of regions.

Roughly speaking, the south of England takes a long time to get into drought but a long time to leave. That's because a lot of rainfall is stored in rocks underground and takes a long time to reach rivers and water supplies.

By contrast, the north of England quickly enters drought and quickly gets out because reservoirs are more heavily used for water supplies.

Water Companies introduce hosepipe bans when water supplies reach a certain low in their areas.

If drought conditions become severe, the government can restrict irrigation of farms, reduce boats' movement on waterways, and limit water available to non-essential businesses like car washes.

In an extreme scenario, it could ration the amount of water available to homes and businesses but that has not happened since 1976.

Water industry bosses and the National Farmers' Union (NFU) are calling on the government to do more to ensure the driest parts of the UK have secure water supplies in the face of any future drought.

Water UK, which represents the water industry, is calling for a new national water grid of pipes, canals and reservoirs to be set up in England to move water from the wettest regions to where it is most needed.

And farmers say they need more government funding and less planning red tape to build their own reservoirs to supply their farms.
Mr Deane came together with five other farmers, including fruit growers, to build their own reservoir. It took four years and cost more than £1m.

It has proved vital, they say, with 15% of the stored water already used this year in the dry conditions.

But the group said obtaining planning permission was costly and difficult.

A government spokesman said it was working with the agricultural sector to improve its water supply resilience and establish more groups of farmers who could work together to develop their own reservoirs.

He added: "Over £104bn of private sector investment has been secured to fund essential infrastructure, including nine new reservoirs, to help secure our future water supply for farmers."
The prolonged dry weather is linked to what are called "blocking highs" when a high pressure weather system becomes stuck.

Scientists do not know if this blocked pattern is linked to climate change.

Global warming is expected to cause more extreme weather events globally.

Studies about our future climate suggest more and longer periods of dry weather as well as periods of less rainfall in the UK. Winters are likely to be wetter and warmer.

That could exacerbate other forms of drought like hydrological or agricultural drought, according to the Met Office.
