Washington Irving wrote about Hell Gate as if it had a personality — irritable, unpredictable, capable of sleeping and raging within the same tide. Two centuries later, not much has changed.

Early Fetch but not that early: at one point he had his left hand on the fish’s back behind him and his right hand holding on in front, but at some point I moved him into what I was thinking of as the “awww hell!” position and this became the basis of the logo.
