THE LANGUAGE OF THE BRANCHES
The Torah, the method of correction that Moses gave to the nation of Israel, was written in the language of the branches. It uses corporeal concepts (branches) to point to spiritual elements (roots).
Kabbalists, people who attain both worlds—the corporeal and the spiritual—can “decode” the language of the branches. They identify which spiritual root is specified by what corporeal branch, hence, in the internality of Torah, they see in the Torah instructions for inner work correcting the ego and developing the soul.
People without spiritual attainment can see only corporeal descriptions in the language of the branches. They only see the externality of the Torah and don’t think there’s anything concealed within it. This phenomenon is called “materializing the matters,” and it stems from the millennia of Israel’s detachment from the spiritual world.
Until our time, Kabbalists said nothing about that. But when immigration to the Land of Israel began, indicating the end of the exile, they came out of hiding. They declared it was time to become familiar with the purpose of life through the wisdom of Kabbalah once more, something that had been forgotten since the ruin of the Temple.
The uniqueness of the wisdom of Kabbalah is that it doesn’t let us treat things in a corporeal manner. It describes in detail all the elements of “the will to receive” and the stages of correction of each of them, complete with sketches and calculations. Kabbalah leads us step by step up the levels of correction and teaches us what we have to do at each level and how. It doesn’t let us imagine we can attain anything good in our lives unless we correct our egos, and shows us that the way to do it is through internal actions.
