COMING ATTRACTION! Tuesday, July 14, from 6 to 8 pm: A book party for Nora Rubel, author of “Recipes for the Melting Pot: The Stories of the Settlement Cook Book.” Maybe your mother or grandmother had a copy of The Settlement, aka “The Way to a Man’s Heart.” My mother had one from 1947, and it was the only cookbook she had (unless there was a paperback copy of Jennie Grossinger’s book somewhere around—maybe). I started reading The Settlement as a child, fascinated with its mysterious mix of Jewish and non-Jewish recipes, old-fashioned language, archaic household hints, and and adorable illustrations. I turned to it again and again, for entertainment and for comfort (although rarely for recipes), and it’s the reason I have my bookshop today. Bring your own copy to show off and find out why this book has endured for more than a century—and have Nora sign a copy of her long-awaited book-biography. Come catch up with out-of-print food books by a rainbow of your favorite gay authors—Claiborne, Beard, Olney, Bugialli, Tower, Hamilton, Lebovitz, Villas, Lo, Malgieri, Sax, Turshen, and of course Gold & Fizdale—and the straight authors, too, if you insist. I’ll pay your sales tax, and my $6 totes will be half-price.

A brief trip to Westchester yielded a bumper crop of beautiful books, and I'll need another trip or two to this collection to complete the harvest. SO many community cookbooks, many with their plastic comb bindings relaced with black satin ribbon! I've never seen this particular cookbook craft before. Please call or email with queries.

The perfect array on a beautiful day: violets and their companions bursting forth out front; shelves chock-full of good books (and more waiting in the wings); a plethora of kitchen and table accessories; and out back, a glorious spring garden where you (and even I) can sit and read. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.
