Alice Chun went from teaching architecture at Columbia to founding Solight Design after her son’s asthma diagnosis pushed her research toward clean solar technology. Her origami-inspired Solar Puff folds flat and pops open into a solar lantern, a safer alternative to toxic kerosene for the 1.6 billion people without electricity. Alice shares how her lights reached Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominica, and Ukraine, and how that work led to Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s Gutsy and support from Bob Iger. We also dig into the business: losing B2B revenue when USAID was dismantled, negotiating big-box distribution margins, and why she thinks of her product as “individualized infrastructure.”

From our light to yours...

The sun is the most powerful source of energy that reaches our planet each day.

But the brightest light has never come from the sky.

It comes from the human heart.
It has now been more than a month since the earthquakes shook Venezuela.

The headlines have begun to fade.

The television cameras have moved on.

But for the families living among the rubble, recovery is only beginning.

Every day brings another small step forward—another neighborhood reconnecting to the power grid, another school reopening, another family returning to what remains of their home. Yet for thousands of people, the road ahead is still long, and the need for light, comfort, and hope remains just as real today as it was on the first night after the earthquake.

We will continue to stand beside the people of Venezuela for as long as we are needed.

Compassion in Action

Long after sunset...

Long after the cameras have gone home...

There are still people quietly walking toward the darkness—carrying light for someone else.
