National 5 & 10

National 5 & 10 Established in 1931. National 5 & 10 was started by Louis Handloff, who came to America from Russia in 1906.

National 5 & 10 is a locally owned and operated family business in downtown Newark, DE, specializing in Delaware and University of Delaware clothing and souvenirs. The story goes that after arriving in Philadelphia, Louis set out to find a place to raise his family and took the train one stop further south from Philly each week until he discovered Newark. Knowing a good thing when he saw it, Louis decided that Newark was the place to be. Around 1911, he settled his family on Main Street and started a small business called Louis Handloff Outfitters. Louis would go to Philadelphia to get sewing supplies for his wife, Molly, who would make aprons and sell them from the front room of their house on Main Street. Over time, the neighbors started requesting that he bring back supplies for them too and the business took off. National 5 & 10 has been serving the Newark community ever since and has been in our current location for over 85 years. We have been family-owned and operated for four generations.

So, our good friend Gibby Young commented on our post yesterday and mentioned that we are still going strong 5 generations later, which is true, but what most of you don’t know is that we recently added our 6th generation!! We are so happy to introduce our newest little 5 & Dimer (and poster child for our Delaware onesies…😂) Please join me in welcoming this baby Blue Hen to the family. And although he doesn’t currently live in DE, we hope he’ll make his way back to take over the store sometime around 2060. 🙏🏻😂

Please join me in wishing a very Happy 75th Birthday to this QUEEN…my mom Elaine Lowe Handloff. 🎉 She started working at the 5 & 10 when she was 16…she worked at our lunch counter and eventually stole the heart of her boss, my dad. 🥰 (He had to fire her because he wasn’t allowed to date the employees. 😂 ) She was eventually allowed to come back after they were married…lol. Love this photo of her modeling Wrangler jeans by Peter Max for us in the early 70’s. ❤️
