Drops Improve Night Driving Vision
In low light or mesopic conditions, vision doesn’t seem as sharp as in daylight. Put simply, light provides sight. Navigating a dark house or street can be difficult, but night driving poses additional challenges. Glare, halos, and starbursts from oncoming headlights, reflections, and streetlights can interfere with vision. Part of the problem is that pupils dilate in low light, allowing ocular scatter from those sources, which diffuses light across a broader area of the retina, reducing image contrast. That effect is compounded by ocular conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, internal reflections from interocular lenses, and LASIK. Now, a collaboration of researchers in Missouri, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and California have identified an eye drop that improves decreased mesopic low-contrast visual acuity (mLCVA).
