A small glimpse into the dark underbelly of the vintage world…

The death pile: a small graveyard of good intentions in the back room, where vintage clothes go to haunt me until I give them some time and a needle. They start off as “easy fixes” and somehow multiply while I’m not looking. I think they’re breeding.

Just in: early 20th-century shop jacket. Garment supply companies used to rent workwear to factory hands, butchers, grocers, barbers, and bakers. Once a jacket was properly soiled, it went back to the company to be laundered and sent out to the next man. This one clearly put in its time.

Just arrived - a true piece of early 20th-century history.

Coat and apron supply companies used to rent work clothes to butchers, grocers, barbers, and bakers. The company owned the garment. It was stamped inside, laundered, and sent back out to the next man.

This one is stamped Prop. of Apex Coat & Apron Supply, Philadelphia.

Just in: WWII US Army khaki chinos with gas flap intact.

Officially designated “Trousers, Cotton, Khaki, Special.” Under military specification PQD 19B (introduced in February 1943), the Army added the word “Special” to its uniform nomenclature to denote garments modified for anti-chemical warfare.

The gas flap was designed to create a sealed barrier, keeping blistering chemical agents off the skin through the gaps in the buttons.

By early 1945, the military decided chemical attacks were unlikely and phased the flap out. Along with the short production window, a lot of these pairs are gone because GIs hated the extra bulk and inconvenience at the loo, and the story goes, cut the flaps out soon after they were issued.

Finding a single pair with the flap fully intact is uncommon. Four pairs in a modern wearable size is a very good day.

All four are W32 L35 and will be out at the brick and mortar shop next week. Thu to Sat // 10 to 6.

I hung the tramp art cross in the middle of the wall behind the checkout counter, where people walk past it on the way to the fitting room.

Someone notched every cut with a pocketknife after a day’s work that had already used up his hands. It’s likely nobody paid him for it and fittingly it’s one of the few things in the shop that I won’t put a price on.

The chambrays above it are worn through from hard work. The apron below came from the Newberg Lumber Yard a few blocks away, gone before I was born. The people that wore this stuff built things most of us will never know existed.

I hang them to stay mindful of how temporary this all is. That there is something greater, of higher importance.

On this earth I aspire to live a quiet life, to mind my own business, and to work diligently with my hands. I am very aware that most of what I do in this shop is small and will be forgotten. I’m ok with that.
