Good Morning, Florida.
Back on this day, October 17th in 1931, as Florida’s winter agricultural and tourism seasons approached, state officials panicked over reports that a "jobless army" of roughly 100,000 transient workers was moving south toward the state.
Local economies were already buckling under the weight of the Great Depression. Fearing that thousands of destitute, unemployed families would collapse local relief funds and compete for scarce agricultural jobs, Florida officials authorized a hardline border prevention strategy, closing Florida to these migrant workers. Sheriff Checkpoints were set up and County sheriffs and armed guards were deployed directly to key transit junctions, roads, and rail lines along the northern Florida border.

Good Morning, Florida!
On this day in Florida history, October 16, 1829, territorial Governor William Pope DuVal approved the incorporation of Christ Church Parish in Pensacola. At the time, Florida was still a U.S. territory, having been transferred from Spanish to American control earlier in the decade. Construction of the original church began in 1830, and the building was completed in 1832.
Today, Old Christ Church remains a tangible reminder of Florida's territorial past and the many chapters of history that unfolded within its walls.
