Good morning, Florida!
Today, August 8 (1896), we celebrate the birthdate of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings born. She met Charles Rawlings and married him in 1919. In 1928, with a small inheritance from her mother, she purchased 72-acres in Florida. That same year, she and her husband Charles were divorced; living in rural Florida did not appeal to him.
She began writing stories set in the Florida scrub country. Her first novel, South Moon Under, was published in 1933. The book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She found success again in 1938 with The Yearling, a story about a Florida boy and his pet deer. It was selected for the Book-of-the-Month Club, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1939.

Good Morning, Florida!
On August 6th, back in 1868, the Florida Legislature authorized the current Great Seal design. That Seal would be the size of the American silver dollar, having in the center, a view of the sun's rays over a high land in the distance, a cocoa tree, a steamboat on water, and an Indian female scattering flowers in the foreground, encircled by the words, 'Great Seal of the State of Florida: In God We Trust'. Through the years interpretations of these basic elements have evolved, including changing the name “cocoa tree” to “sabal palmetto palm,” the elimination of a mountainous terrain in the background, and changing the dress of the Seminole Indian figure to be more historically accurate.

On this day, August 5th in 1968, The Republican National Convention was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Symbolic of the South's changing political affiliation, this was the first Republican National Convention held in a prior Confederate State.
