The first day of school deserves more than a rushed picture on the way out the door.

These might technically be balloons, but what I really love about them is the picture they create.

A name. A grade. School colors. A little first-day-of-school moment waiting on the porch before everyone heads out the door.

Because kindergarten only happens once. First grade only happens once. And somehow those first-day pictures become the ones we keep pulling out years later.

I created these personalized back-to-school balloon columns as an easy way to make that picture feel a little more special. Each one can be customized with your child’s name, grade and colors, creating a personalized backdrop for those first-day photos.

A grand opening really needs more than just a room full of people—it needs to feel like something big is actually happening.

I had the opportunity to design a custom ceiling balloon installation for a community celebration over at the Vails Gate Fire Department in New Windsor, and it was so much fun to bring to life.

Styled by Deb came up with the event concept and color direction, and I took care of matching those exact shades and building an overhead layout that flowed across the space, right above the glowing Alpha-Lit letters.

Instead of doing a standard arch, we took everything up to the ceiling to give the room movement and a huge focal point without crowding the floor. I always love a good design puzzle, especially when the balloons need to blend seamlessly into a bigger overall setup.

This was definitely one of those projects where the decor didn’t just sit there—it completely shifted the energy of the whole space.

Styled by Deb developed the event concept and color direction, and I brought that vision into the balloon design through careful color matching and a custom ceiling installation that flowed across the space and over the illuminated Alpha-Lit letters.

Rather than a traditional balloon arch, we took the balloons upward — creating movement, dimension and a dramatic focal point without taking away from the room itself.

I love a good design challenge, especially when the balloons need to work as part of a larger event concept.

This is one of those installations where the balloons weren’t just decoration. They helped transform the entire room.

Such a fun afternoon celebrating the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Newburgh Kush Factory.

For the event, we created custom grand opening balloon décor in their merlot, white and gold palette, including an organic balloon garland at the entrance and coordinated balloon bouquets throughout the celebration.

What I really love about grand openings is that the ribbon cutting is only one part of the day.

People are arriving, taking pictures, meeting one another, congratulating the owners and creating all of these little moments around the opening of a new business. The décor helps set that celebratory tone from the moment people walk up and gives the day a strong visual backdrop for the photos and memories that come out of it.

It was also great meeting a few fellow business owners and seeing so many Chamber members, friends and community leaders come out to support Melvina and the Kush Factory team. Councilman and Acting Deputy Supervisor Scott Manley also shared a few words and presented Melvina with a recognition during the celebration.

Congratulations to Melvina and the entire Kush Factory team on such a great opening.

A little summer throwback because I somehow never posted this one.

Earlier this summer, Madeline’s Room had the opportunity to sponsor the balloon décor for Beautiful People Adaptive Sports’ Under the Sea prom.

This one was especially meaningful because Beautiful People does such important work creating inclusive opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities in our community.

It also came with a really interesting design challenge: traditional latex balloons weren’t an option because of allergy concerns among some of the guests.

So I had to think differently.

Instead of relying on the materials I would normally use, I worked with alternative balloon materials, metallic sea-life elements, transparent pieces and different textures to bring the Under the Sea theme to life throughout the room.

And I loved how it came together.

What I especially loved was that it didn’t feel like a compromise. The room still felt colorful, playful and immersive. The limitation didn’t make the design feel limited. It just required a different way of thinking.

That is one of the things I love most about design. Every event comes with its own set of considerations, and sometimes the best part is figuring out what can work beautifully within them.

I was really happy to be able to contribute something to a celebration centered around joy, inclusion and community.

And I still love these pictures.

Graduation season always reminds me how much I love doing this.

For Evan’s celebration in Cornwall-on-Hudson, we created this notebook-paper-inspired backdrop and pulled in all of these bright, happy school details around it.

What I really love about this setup is that it was at home. You don’t always need a huge venue or a massive installation to make something feel special. Sometimes it’s really just about choosing the right area and making that one space feel intentional.

And I think that’s what worked here. It gave everyone a place to gather, take pictures, celebrate Evan, and still let the house feel like the house.

I’m also a sucker for a design that feels personal to the person we’re celebrating, and this one definitely did.

So much classic balloon goodness here!

This one reminded me of why I fell in love with balloons in the first place.

There are so many classic balloon elements tucked into this design. The balloon flowers were one of the first things I remember being genuinely excited to learn because something so simple can be used a hundred different ways. I still love a good polka-dot balloon, I will always be down for a great mylar, and give me a really good color palette and I’m happy.

And this palette? Yellow, pink, white, a little blue, bees and flowers. Just HAPPY.

As my work has evolved over the years, I’ve learned a million new techniques and my designs have certainly changed, but I don’t think I’ll ever outgrow the simple joy of putting really good colors together and watching them turn into something.

This little bumblebee celebration in Woodstock felt like a bit of a love letter to all of that.

Sometimes you don’t need complicated. You just need really good color and balloons that make people happy.
