Decker's Market

Decker's Market Grocery Store and Florist In 1911, at the age of eighteen, Ed Decker opened a general store in Melbeta, Nebraska.

The store featured groceries, dry goods, shoes, and general hardware. Ed staffed the store with his father Bazel, and wife, Lucy and later with their children. They were supplied by a wholesaler in Scottsbluff, Nebraska that was later purchased by Nash Finch Company. The store operated under the U & I store banner, (United and Independent Stores). In 1937, Ed’s oldest son, Thurman opened a grocery

store in Lyman, Nebraska. Ed relocated his business to Guernsey, Wyoming in 1940, where he remained until retiring in 1953. Max Decker along with his brother, Thurman, and father Ed Decker built a new store in Newcastle, Wyoming in 1954 – Decker’s Food Center. Unlike the general stores the family had in the past, this was a supermarket selling primarily food products. The store featured only the newest innovations for fixtures, equipment and marketing available; most of which had never been seen in the market. The store was located blocks away from main street shopping and boasted a large free parking lot with customer carryout service. The original building has been expanded five times and the store has been remodeled several more times. Today, the store is about 17,000 square feet with a bakery, deli, full-service floral department, as well as the traditional offerings of a supermarket. Max and Thurman built a second store in Gillette, Wyoming in 1961 when Thurman’s son, Gary joined the company. During the next fifty years family members operated stores in fourteen different communities over a four state area. Today, the family tradition is carried on in Wyoming by Max’s sons, Danny and Kenny. Danny operates the store in Newcastle, while Kenny manages their store in Lusk that they purchased in 1992. The brothers also operate a third store in Sundance that was purchased in 2011from their cousin Gary. The family tradition is also carried on by their cousin Edgar who operates two stores in eastern Nebraska.

New plan in store
Employee ownership becomes next chapter for Decker’s

After more than a century of family ownership, Decker’s Market is entering a new chapter.
The company has completed a transaction in which Danny and Jeremiah Decker sold a 49% interest in Decker’s Market to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, making employees shareholders in the company while the Decker family retains majority ownership and management control in the near term.

Today marks something special. The Decker family is proudly selling back to the employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). For over a century, Decker's Market has been more than a grocery store; it has been a family tradition, built by five generations of the Decker family and supported by an incredible community.
Max Decker often said, "The best thing you can do for your community is run a good business."
Today, his son, Danny Decker, and grandson, Jeremiah Decker, are carrying that legacy forward.
"One of the best ways we can show confidence in our community, our employees, and our business is by sharing in its success with the people who make it happen every day. We work alongside them, celebrate the wins together, and believe they should have the opportunity to share in what we are building."

You'll still see the same familiar faces, the same hometown service, and the same commitment to our customers. The difference is that the people who serve you every day now have an even greater stake in the business's success. Decker says, “Now when you support and shop local, you are directly supporting those who serve you every day.”
An ESOP is a retirement benefit that allows eligible employees to earn ownership in the company over time. As Decker's grows and succeeds, everyone shares in that success.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to our incredible employees, our loyal customers, and our communities for supporting Decker's Market.
