BarnSwallow Pottery

BarnSwallow Pottery A big red barn in Maine where countless people have found pottery, antiques, garden items, artwork, jewelry and unique odds and ends since 1976.

BarnSwallow has been a Maine tradition since the early 1970's when Barbara O'Brien, a talented and self-taught potter, began creating and selling her work. Moving to Newfield in 1976, BarnSwallow expanded to earn its current reputation for unique and affordable quality crafts, created by various artisans, along with antiques and garden items. Barbara stopped making pottery in 2018 due to health is

sues and sadly passed away in October 2020. Her daughter Alyssa, a photographer and writer, took over the business in 2020 and is currently focused on curating and expanding BarnSwallow's offerings, which still include locally made pottery, antiques, garden items, artwork, jewelry and other interesting items. This big red barn from the 1860's in scenic Newfield has something for everybody. Our yearly season begins in late March and concludes in early December. We are open most days by chance. Feel free to contact us via Facebook, Instagram or phone to confirm we are open any given day.

I am sad to tell all of his friends that Tucker passed away this morning. We were together in the living room and he appeared to have a stroke. He passed on the way to the urgent care vet. I am grateful he did not struggle very long. He had a wonderful life and was very loved by mom, me, friends and so many customers in the shop. Thank you to all of you who gave him some love and pets through the years.

Happy Turkey Day! We will be open tomorrow for Black Friday, Saturday for Small Business Saturday and on Sunday. Bundle up because the barn is not heated. Here are a few new items in the shop. The two dark shiny pots are Prinknash, English pottery started by monks in the 1940’s. The two photos are from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1922 and 1923. They are each four feet long. After this weekend if you’d like to stop by message me or call and we can pick a time. Otherwise, we will see you in the spring. Thank you all for another great season!

Back in the 1970’s, the day before Christmas, mom suddenly needed a plumber. She managed to reach Bernie, who she didn’t know. He came over and fixed the problem. She tried to pay him and he waved away his hand and said Merry Christmas. She quickly grabbed one of her hanging planters and told him to give it to his wife for Christmas. Ann Marie, Bernie’s wife, says that planter started it all. She and her daughter Jennie were recently in the shop and shared these photos of her collection. Jennie has her own, in different glazes. She is one of very few people who mom ever let register for her wedding in the shop. That is proof of how much she liked this family. It is always nice to see people who also remember her fondly.

A customer came in today and told me she had always admired mom and her pottery. She started doing pottery herself and decided to research mom and found this TV segment from 1997. I’m very grateful she emailed it to me when she got home. If you want to go directly to her part fast forward to the ten minute mark. Absolutely wild.
