Today, a group came into Vinny’s Vinyl to express concerns about an album we carry because its cover contains N**i imagery.
I want to address this directly rather than allow assumptions to be made about what we believe or what our store represents.
Vinny’s Vinyl does not support, promote, or endorse N**ism, antisemitism, racism, or hate of any kind. Period.
We are a record store. We carry music from many different artists, genres, eras, cultures, and viewpoints. Some of that music and artwork can be controversial, offensive, provocative, or uncomfortable. The presence of an album in our inventory is not an endorsement of its artwork, the artist’s beliefs, or every message associated with it.
I understand why someone would find N**i imagery deeply offensive. They have every right to feel that way and to voice their concerns, and I respect their right to do so. At the same time, I don't believe a record store should remove a lawful piece of music simply because its artwork or content is controversial.
Music history isn't always comfortable, and neither is art. Record stores have always been places where people can discover, discuss, question, dislike, and even be offended by what they find.
You don't have to agree with everything on our shelves. I certainly don't. But carrying something and endorsing it are two very different things.
Vinny’s Vinyl will continue to be a place for music, collectors, conversation, and everyone in our community. Hate has no home here. Music does.
