Each arm has two screws in the back. They hold tapered candles. They are quite lovely. Each weighs 2 pounce and 15 ounces. These were removed from the Malbone Castle in Newport Rhode Island that my father was working on.

Really cool railway lanterns

This is a set of reproduction Victorian style wall mounted Great Western Railway Brass Carriage Sconces. The glass lamp shades are probably blown glass and is in great shape. Made circa 1950-1960 these sconces are very good shape given its age.
