The walls are going up, and so is our excitement.

Wednesday, 4 incredible Women Build volunteers braved the North Carolina heat, logged 12.5 volunteer hours, and raised all of the front and back wall sections of the house.

That’s right… they came, they saw, they stood those walls up!

It is amazing how quickly a stack of lumber starts looking like a home when you put a few determined volunteers (and a whole lot of teamwork) on the job!

We are so grateful for this hardworking crew and everything they accomplished today. They didn’t just build walls, they helped build the future home of a local family.

Want to help us keep this house moving up? We’d love to have you on the build site!

Saturday has arrived, and apparently so has every chair within a 40-mile radius.

The ReStore is packed with the kind of stuff that makes “I’m just looking” collapse almost immediately under questioning.

One minute you’re minding your business. The next minute you’re measuring the back of the SUV and calling somebody named Gary because Gary has a trailer.

This is how Saturdays get away from you.

Some days the ReStore is very committed to a theme.

Today’s theme appears to be: your house has recently inherited money and would like everyone to know about it.

There’s a mirror with enough architectural ambition to require its own zip code, a pair of enormous framed palms, a crystal bowl waiting patiently for somebody to put butterscotch candies in it, and a recliner that looks prepared to hear your concerns between 2 and 4.

Then there’s that tall wavy mirror, which has absolutely seen somebody practice an argument before leaving the house.

A woven-seat chair has also joined us and seems to have arrived directly from a porch where iced tea was taken very seriously.

Anyway. The building is full.

Come investigate.

A normal day for Rachelle begins by unlocking the gate.

From there, she opens the outside buildings, turns on the fans, lights and music, heads to the morning meeting, turns on the open signs and gets the day moving.

She helps guests write tickets, loads sold items, unloads donations, moves sold merchandise to the shed, processes donations during downtime and stages the ReStore so things look less like several unrelated living rooms collided at highway speed.

And then there are donation pickups.

That means heading out in the truck, getting furniture and other donations safely loaded, bringing everything back, unloading it again and somehow returning to the yard like moving a sectional, a dining table and somebody’s grandmother’s china cabinet before lunch was a completely ordinary Tuesday.

A lot of her day is also spent answering questions and helping customers figure out what needs a ticket, where something goes and what happens next.

The part people may not realize she does quite as much? Staging.

Because Rachelle is usually seen outside in the yard, quietly moving approximately half the county from one location to another and somehow making it look like all of it had a plan.

At 3:30, the gate closes and projects start wrapping up.

At 3:45, closing begins.

Things get cleaned, reset and put back where they belong so the next morning can begin with a fresh assortment of furniture, donations and logistical decisions nobody could possibly have predicted the day before.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, o Rachelle also added driving the donation truck to the list.

There must have been a blank line.

At some point, furniture stops being furniture and starts requiring its own room.

This is that point.

The desk alone looks like it expects correspondence to arrive by courier. The cabinet would like everyone to lower their voices. The dresser has seen several generations make questionable decisions and has chosen not to comment.

And then there’s the wire basket on wheels, which has absolutely no interest in explaining itself.

New stuff is out. Come investigate.

We need to know who she’s ignoring.

Because that chin is up. Those eyes are closed. And whatever was just said has apparently been denied entry into her personal atmosphere.

Was it a neighbor?
A waiter?
Someone explaining cryptocurrency?
A sentence beginning with “Actually…”?

Wrong answers are strongly encouraged.

There are days when you come into the ReStore looking for something specific.

And then there are days when you walk in, make eye contact with something you absolutely did not know existed six minutes ago, and begin rearranging your house mentally.

This feels like one of those days.

Come wander around. There are decisions waiting to be made, several of which may require measuring a wall first.

Despite the name, we do not measure it by actual sweat.

There is no bucket. No weigh-in. Nobody is standing at the build site with a clipboard evaluating perspiration.

Sweat equity is the time Habitat homebuyers put into the homeownership program before purchasing their home.

That can include helping build their own home or another Habitat home, volunteering at the ReStore, attending required homeownership education, and completing other approved activities.

It’s one of the ways future homeowners actively participate in the process.

So, yes, there may be actual sweat involved.

We just have considerably less paperwork for that part.
