Alrighty Sampson County! Come out to Newton Grove’s Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church TODAY AT 2PM to hear Professor Susan B. Ridgely share how she became passionate as a student at UNC-CH to tell the story of how two families, one white and one black, one once slave owners, one once slaves, led one church forth together in eastern North Carolina in the years following the Civil War. That church still stands today as our local Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove. Ridgely’s book “One True Church: An American Story of Race, Family, and Religion” explores the complicated dynamic of those people the Monk and Cole Plantations produced, both white and black, and their walk of faith together.

Ridgely’s book is available at Newton Grove Drug as well as Dr. Pamela Monk Kelley’s book that tells the story of one of those two Monk families.

Kelley’s “All Roads Lead to Newton Grove: The History of the Monk Family” tells the story of the Monk family that produced the likes of Thelonius Monk, the acclaimed jazz musician; Art Monk, the Hall of Fame football player of Redskins, Jets & Eagles fame; and The Fabulous Monk Family singers, contemporaries of Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown. Her included transcripts of family interviews is a treasure in itself.

Ever been curious about the Heritage House at Weeks Park? That is the humble home of these Monk families. Do come out and learn more about our local history and how it impacts society today. You will not regret it!

the Monk families, their histories, and how their relationships shaped our local Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church which was uniquely supported by both the black and white communities jointly.

Dr. Pamela Monk Kelley also plans to attend and will have her related genealogy book “All Roads Lead to Newton Grove: The History of the Monk Family” on hand.
