The downy foliage of Antennaria leaves offers both food and shelter for caterpillars of the American Lady Butterfly. Look how this caterpillar is combing the leaf and applying the fuzz to pad the web they’ve woven between leaves. And on an overcast rainy day, here they are leaf munching.

The host plant grows new leaves and can support multiple generations of caterpillars in a season. Plant by plant, garden by garden together we are creating life sustaining habitat.

Two Black Swallowtail Butterflies emerged from their chrysalides yesterday in the enclosure in the nursery. They fed on Golden Alexanders as caterpillars. Your planting choices can support the lives of countless creatures. Thank you for caring about native plants and their insect partners.
