To the well-intentioned sports parent who didn’t show up in the bleachers at their athlete’s last game…

Yes, you.

The one who normally rushes back from work to make the first pitch. The one who tries to schedule everything around your child’s games. The one who figures out when to work the concession stand so you don’t miss any of your child’s game minutes.

You… the one that had to miss that last one.

I know the guilt is creeping in.

Maybe you were traveling for work and missed your son’s inside-the-park home run.

Maybe you had to pick up an extra shift to make ends meet and you missed your daughter’s big win against their team’s rival.

Maybe you had multiple kids playing at the same time and couldn’t split your body into multiple parts even though you wish you could.

Maybe you had that out-of-town personal trip that’s been on the calendar for months that happened to coincide with Johnny’s in-house game.

I know you’re beating yourself up.

You can’t stop thinking about that one meme you saw with a picture of a parent giving their athlete a post-game hug with a message that read: “When my athlete looks up in the stands, I always want to make sure they know someone is there supporting them.”

And then all the commenters say things like: “Always! I never miss a game!”

Or

“I would never let Susie look up and not have anyone there.”

And now you feel like a bad parent.

Can I remind you of something?

There are more ways to “show up” for your athlete than JUST the stands… that are JUST as meaningful.

And you show up.
A lot.

You show up when you make sure their uniform is clean.

You show up when you have the GameChanger play-by-play hidden under the table during your business dinner.

You show up when you call them after the game because you want to hear their version of how it went.

You show up when you save up money to pay the registration and buy a new pair of cleats so she can play.

You show up when you play catch in the back yard.

You.
Show.
Up.

And it ALL matters.

In today’s year-round schedule, game-heavy youth sports world — it’s nearly impossible to show up physically all the time…

… but don’t let a few missed games negate the way you show up in every other way for your athlete.
